Lawyers representing former Arua Municipality MP Godi Akbar Hussein have today asked court to acquit him on charges of murder.

Lawyers led by Henry Kunya told Justices of the Court of Appeal that the High Court judge that convicted Godi, did not properly evaluate the evidence on record.

He says the judge disregarded the evidence of eye witnesses and instead convicted his client on circumstantial evidence.

However prosecution led by Senior Principal State Attorney Joan Kagezi asked court to dismiss the appeal, saying the court reached a rightful decision.

Godi is challenging the 25year sentence handed to him in February 2011 by the High court in Mukono, for the murder of his 19 year old wife Rehema Ceaser.

He appeared before three justices of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Constance Byamugisha who set ruling on notice.

Rehema was murdered in December 2008 at Lukojo village in Mukono district.

Godi is dissatisfied with both the conviction and 25 year sentence the court handed him.

Their vehicles were recently shattered during the recent demonstrations, but the police and the government in general doesn’t want opposition leaders to walk on foot or use public means while visiting markets, courts, places of workshop… Some of the opposition leaders like Kenneth Paul Kakande (the spokesperson of the Democratic Party) have no cars because they were stolen, damaged in demonstrations or seized by the police. Kakande says that the government has impoverished them.

They don’t have the money to repair their cars but whenever they move on foot the police arrests them and whenever they drive their cars the police arrests them that mechanically dangerous conditioned cars.

For example in Kampala today, the police arrested FDC women league leader Ingrid Turinawe and Kampala woman MP Nagayi Sempala as they were walking to Court in a procession from their homes. The opposition leader Col. Kiiza Besigye describes the charges police charges opposition leaders as politically motivated arguing that the Government does not have evidence to sustain them in court.

The Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR): This is a Kenyan non-governmental organization whose mission is to contribute to the strengthening of national research for health in Kenya.

This is done by providing support for multidisciplinary research to individuals and institutions, and engaging policy makers in formulation of health research policies that are evidence based.

The Consortium also contributes to the building of networks and communities in research for health.

The Research Career Development Grants, 2012.

As part of its national research capacity-strengthening mandate, CNHR invites applications for Research Career Development Grants (RCDGs) from qualified Kenyan researchers (currently based in Kenya or working within the Diaspora) who wish to further develop their careers while undertaking research and training programmes in Kenya.

The grants aim at enabling successful applicants to obtain high-quality research training that will lay the foundation for a successful independent research career.

In the long-term, the aim is to build a critical mass of researchers undertaking relevant research-for-health for the betterment of Kenyans.

CNHR is planning to award twelve (12) RCDGs commencing in October 2012.

The RCDGs are being offered in collaboration with multi-institutional research-for-health collaborative set-ups such as the four CNHR-supported Centres of Research Excellence (CoReS).

These are:

  • CREHSS based at Great Lakes University of Kisumu,
  • SIRCLE based at the KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Programme in Nairobi,
  • CREATES based at Strathmore University and CERNVec based at icipe).

The grants will be competitively offered to support the development of research ideas, or acquisition of specialized research/training skills as a step towards a productive independent research career in areas of national health priority currently focused on the attainment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 (child health); 5 (maternal health); 6 (infectious diseases); emerging and non-communicable diseases, with improvement of Health Systems as an overarching theme.

The selection process, to be undertaken by an Expert Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC), comprising of internationally recognized researchers and policy makers, will focus on identifying individuals who are committed to attaining the highest standards in scientific research excellence, motivated to work in collaboration and partnership, and will strive to be world leaders in their chosen fields of research.

Successful applicants are likely to be those who have a good track record of achievement, exhibit passion, enthusiasm and aptitude for a long-term career research-for-health.

In addition, sound knowledge of the scientific background for the research project should be apparent, and the research chosen should be relevant to the health and development need of Kenya, focused and feasible within the timescale proposed.

Career Development Grants Eligibility

The programme encourages a systems approach to research and training and its integration with policy and practice.

Professionals undertaking research-for-health related work are therefore encouraged to participate.

Where applicable, the proposed research work needs to have received ethical approval in accordance with national and international guidelines before funds from CNHR are awarded.

The RCDG awards are open to qualified Kenyans resident in Kenya or working within the Diaspora. Researchers of other nationalities who have valid working permits, and are currently working within Kenyan institutions will also be considered, as long as they are able to demonstrate evidence of willingness to provide research service in Kenya after completion of the fellowship.

Applicants to the RCDG programme must, in addition, fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be a bonafide employee of/or currently undertaking further relevant training in a public or private research-for-health and/or teaching institution. Qualified applicants in self-employment but with relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Posses, for non-clinicians, a PhD/DPhil qualification in a biomedical, clinical, social science or an allied discipline. Clinical researchers with an M.Med and with teaching/research experience are eligible to apply as Mid-Career Clinical Research Fellows. University-based mid-career researchers should hold a position equivalent to a Lecturer or above.
  • Have a record (or show potential of) as a researcher with evidence of quality peer reviewed publications;
  • Have proven potential of research leadership capability;
  • Demonstrate motivation for health research capacity strengthening evidenced by a track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students. A track record of attracting research funds will be an added advantage.
  • Researchers working within the Diaspora should show commitment of wanting to return to Kenya to further their career while working within the existing institutions.

My name is Fred Mukasa Mbidde, the legal advisor of the Democratic Party. I have evidence that some of our party members Simon Peter Ochene, Gerald Kobwemi, John Tumusiime among others are being used by the NRM government to destabilize the Democratic Party and I have written to the party to convene disciplinary committee meeting over the matter.

I will personally prosecute them with evidence for using NRM contacts and support to destabilize the progress of DP. They have been given lawyers Akampurira and company advocates and Enos Tumusiime of Kampala Associates all paid for by the NRM treasury through MP Singh Katongole.

They also go through two NRM persons I will name before the committee. There is one general of UPDF and one top police officer. The contacts points are at State House are already with me and I have copies of their signs at the visitors’ book of statehouse all which I will lay before the DP disciplinary committee to take action.

New evidence shows that HIV cases first appeared in human beings in Cameroonin the last quarter of the 19th century. A new book on the spread of HIV alleges that the virus spread to humans from a simian, Walakira Nyanzi reports.

The book alleges that HIV/AIDS started when a hunter caught an infected chimpanzee for food and the virus entered from the chimpanzee’s blood into the hunter’s body. The name of the hunter is not revealed in the book.

The book further alleges that HIV spread during the time when European countries were partitioningAfrica. The book alleges that HIV/AIDS reached USA and Europe through intermarriages between African slaves and the whites.  The book also notes that other deadly diseases like sleeping sickness, smallpox and syphilis were brought toAfricaby the Europeans.

HIV likely festered in Kinshasa for decades prior to entering into global circulation in the 1970s, the authors say. It alleges that between 1960 and 1970s between 1000 and 2000 residents in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo had become infected with HIV/AIDS. The book notes that many HIV/Aids victims mingled with United Nations workers from Haiti who had come to Kinshasha to work as physicians and civil servants.

HIV/AIDS has killed millions of people across the world. The book was authored by a Washington Post journalist and an Aids researcher atHarvardUniversity; Craig Timberg and Harvard epidemiologist Daniel Halperin. It says that HIV/AIDS broke inCameroonabout 100 years ago. Since HIV/AIDS broke out, the book notes that it has killed millions of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Victoria (Uganda), Zambia, Botswana and South Africa.

A woman committed suicide and was found dead in her bed. Jacqueline Nansubuga, a resident of Namasuba Kalina Zone was found dead by her family members who had gone to her room to greet her on Thursday.

She left behind a note. It read: “A note to police and my family members. I am sorry to have killed myself. But it was because of debts.”

Nansubuga had made similar complaints to her family members last week when she met her parents in Bunamwaya, Wakiso district. Nansubuga in the note indicated that she had a bank loan she had failed to service and she had no job.

A bottle containing poison was found bedside her bed when the police and residents entered her house. The police are not looking for killers because there is evidence that Nansubuga killed herself.

Her family members and some neighbours have recorded statements. John Kanyike, a brother to the deceased says the deceased would be buried in Masaka on Friday. The police have taken the body to Mulago National Referral hospital for a postmortem.

The state minister for defense Gen. Jeje Odong has been tasked by MPs on defense and internal affairs committee to explain circumstances under which President Museveni acquired the Kisozi land in sembabule district.

The general, who was accompanied by a host of officers including Brig. Silver Kayemba, came under fire by the committee chaired by Milton Muwuma who demanded to know why president Museveni allegedly snatched UPDF land and changed it into his private land where he even put up a farm and a home.

Gen. Odong defended the president land that it was acquired in right way but he clarified that the UPDF land is just next to that of the president and told the mps not to confuse the pieces of land.

MPs asked Odong to bring evidence regarding ownership of the Kisozi land to find out the real owners of the Kisozi land.

The member of parliament for Makindye west Hussein Kyanjo alleged that there are reports that land belonged to UPDF but its ownership was changed to Museveni

The minister however says that there are two pieces of land neighboring each other; a matter which he says confuses some members of the public.

Gen. Jeje odongo had appeared before the defence committee to explain a number of issues related to acquisition of land by the UPDF in various places including Entebbe, Masindi, Bulambuli among others.

The committee chaired by the member of parliament for Kigulu county in Iganga district Milton Muwuma discovered that unlike in the deal of Lugazi university land where the defense ministry followed the laid down procurement rules, land deals in other areas did not follow the law.
Jeje Odongo also denied claims that the ministry of Defence use force to acquire most of the land for the ministry of Defense.
