Special PhD Scholarships for Developing Countries: With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF), Ghent University is able to finance doctoral scholarships for candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a PhD at Ghent University.

No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development.

Relevance for development measures the degree in which the action of development corresponds with the expectations of the beneficiaries, the needs of the country, global priorities and the policies of partners and donors.

There are two types of scholarships: full grants for starting PhD students and grants with a maximum duration of 1 year for students finalizing their PhD research at Ghent University.

Before applying for this grant candidates have to find a ‘promoter’ (professor from Ghent University who will act as personal supervisor of the doctoral research) who agrees to support their application.

The value of the scholarship depends on, a.o., the researcher’s family situation.

The monthly allowance is approx. € 1,700.

PhD Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries: The Special Research Fund of Ghent University allocates yearly a certain budget for students from developing countries in order to obtain a PhD at Ghent University.

The candidate has to be a national of a country on the VLIR-UDC country list and have permanent residence in a developing country.

The total duration of the scholarship may never exceed four years. Before the end of the second year the Ph.D. scholar must write an application for extension.

Generally, two-thirds of the research is conducted at the local institution and one-third in Belgium.

The scholarship holder is free to choose the periods of his/her stays in Belgium and in his/her home country.

For practical reasons, the scholar is obliged to travel to Belgium at the start of the scholarship period.

The scholar receives a monthly allowance of €1,085 or more while residing in Belgium, and of €542 or more while residing in his/her home country, depending on the family situation.
