PhD Scholarships in Ghent University

PhD Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries: The Special Research Fund of Ghent University allocates yearly a certain budget for students from developing countries in order to obtain a PhD at Ghent University.

The candidate has to be a national of a country on the VLIR-UDC country list and have permanent residence in a developing country.

The total duration of the scholarship may never exceed four years. Before the end of the second year the Ph.D. scholar must write an application for extension.

Generally, two-thirds of the research is conducted at the local institution and one-third in Belgium.

The scholarship holder is free to choose the periods of his/her stays in Belgium and in his/her home country.

For practical reasons, the scholar is obliged to travel to Belgium at the start of the scholarship period.

The scholar receives a monthly allowance of €1,085 or more while residing in Belgium, and of €542 or more while residing in his/her home country, depending on the family situation.

The funding also covers tuition fees, travel expenses and bench fees.
