The use of firearms by suspected thugs is on increase in Kampala despite heavy police deployment in the city suburbs.

This is contained in the latest Annual Crime Traffic and Road Safety Report which shows that at least 10 people are murdered every day in Uganda.

The report indicates that Uganda police investigated over 1,987 cases of murder last year in which 3,753 people were killed compared to 1,761 cases in 2010, where 3,160 people were murdered.

The report doesn’t talk about people killed in mob justice, opposition politicians poisoned because they reportedly no longer trusts and or believe in president Museven’s government and his institutions.

Some people critical of Museveni’s leadership allege that Museveni is a liar because he has failed to curb murders and that he should be pushed from power because most of these firearms used to terrorize Ugandans are distributed by him to his relatives, friends and agents.

A source revealed this to our informer yesterday and said that the importation of illegal small arms was high in Uganda due to the weak arms embargoes in Uganda. Uganda controls the importation of sugar, salt and cars but it reduces the surveillance on importation of illegal firearms.

Importation of illegal firearms has led to the loss of lives in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Southern Sudan among other African countries.

Uganda recently signed on an Arms Trade Treaty in a bid to bar importation of illegal firearms such that it uses it to control the inflow of the illegal firearms into Uganda. Uganda is among the countries in the world much affected by the importation of illegal guns.

The Firearms, Ammunition and Related Materials Bill is expected to harmonize and regulate use of guns in Uganda once passed into an act. In Uganda guns are accessed mostly by security organs.

The government is also planning to recall all guns from people who will have to reapply for new guns once the bill is passed into an act of parliament. The number of guns in Uganda is not known.

The Director of legal affairs in the internal affairs ministry Lt .Col Godard Busingye says that the government is ready to check on misuse of guns in Uganda. He has also asked Ugandans to support the bill when it comes on the floor of parliament.
