Denis Onyango become the first Ugandan to win a CAF Champions League medal prompting the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) to reward him with a land title.

Onyango won the Champions league with South African side Mamelodi Sundowns following a 3-1 aggregate score over Egyptian side Zamalek on Sunday 23 October,2016 in Alexandria.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo promised that rewarding is open to everyone as long as they contribute to the development of football.

‘The intent of rewarding Onyango is to motivate all people contributing to the development of  football .The rewards will go to anyone who stands out in football either refereeing, administration and any other individual  whose contribution stands out’ ,said Magogo.

In 2015, Uganda Cranes goalkeeper (1978) Paul Mukisa Ssali was rewarded with a FUFA Presidential award,Faruku Miya and Sandra Nabweteme were voted as best football players for men and women respectively and got a car each.

A statement on fufa.com reads “We congratulate Onyango Denis and Mamelodi Sundowns for winning the CAF Champions League. FUFA has been following Onyango’s performances at his club and we are glad that he will end the year with a CAF Champions League”

Onyango will receive his title on 12th November, 2016 when Uganda Cranes take on Congo Brazzaville in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia qualifier at Mandela National stadium, Namboole.

The rewarding of stand out performers in Ugandan football will inspire more individuals to do more for football development.

The beauty about this all is that it cuts across and whoever who is engaged in football stands a chance to be rewarded.

This is a good trend to follow in the sporting world because it motivates more people to be involved in different sporting activities.

Onyango who is considered by many as one of Africa’s most experienced goalkeepers  has been vital for the Uganda cranes  helping Uganda  ended a 38-year wait for a place in the African Nations Cup finals.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper is credited for good organizational skills; leadership and individual brilliance at the back which helps him organize his defence.

He has proved for a long time being  reliable in the stands and his fitness is vital for Sundowns and the Uganda Cranes in the pursuit of FIFA World Club championship and Russia FIFA World Cup 2018 respectively.

FUFA is on a good trend of rewarding standout performers in football and the government should also support such initiatives in all sporting circles.

Uganda coach Milutin Sredejovic says his side’s friendly against Togo on 04 October, 2016 will be used to assess his team a head of their opening 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana.

The Uganda cranes will camp in the West African country as they step up their preparation with an encounter against the Black Stars in Group E.

The Serbian tactician stated that the training camp will help his team to cope up with the weather of the region and that could lead to a good result.

“A training camp in West Africa will provide the Cranes with that acclimatization advantage considering the fact that every time we have held training camp before a major match, the results have been convincing,” he said.

Almost three weeks since Uganda crushed out of next year’s Nations Cup qualifiers at the hands of champions, Zambia, the nation is yet to know how much revenue was accrued from gate collections.

As a norm after a major international game, Fufa usually announce earnings and expenditure from gate collections, which they did not do at their first news conference after the match on October 16.

Then, Fufa vice president finance Anthony Kimuli said the marketing team is collecting reports across the selling points, which we will have to harmonize with URA.

Since then, however, not much has happened, apart from news that Kimuli, who is supposed to provide it, is abroad.

And Fufa publicist Rogers Mulindwa’s communicated today that Kimuli will not be back in the country for at least the next two months means the nation will have to wait a little longer to know proceeds from Namboole.

Last year’s game between Uganda and Kenya recorded the highest returns ever, grossing 1billion shillings.

Sections of Ugandans are complaining that another group of Ugandans has joined NRM government in looting the country in general.
The critics told us that the club of thieves is in the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA).
Sections of Ugandans claim that FUFA is determined to loot poor Ugandans of their hard earned money because tickets for the Uganda Vs Zambia match in Kampala are sold at 40000, 75000 and 120000 shillings!
Ugandans wonder: For Uganda Cranes to make history needs the support of all Ugandans. Then what will happen if Ugandans don’t go to Namboole stadium on 13th October to cheer their team because FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa is determined to build his money empire from Uganda soccer fans.

To FUFA esteemed fans, there have been raised voices over the charges at the gates for the Uganda Vs Zambia game on 13th October 2012.

As FUFA, Lawrence Mulindwa, theUgandasoccer president says, “we are very sensitive to the fans of the Uganda Cranes but we can only raise our issues in a more calm manner because may be there are matters you may not know that exist we need you to know now.” He says that FUFA is charging 40,000 shillings. FUFA says that the money includes 7200 shillings kept for Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) as VAT.

It is not money taken by Lawrence Mulindwa but Government through URA. FIFA and CAF take 6% or another 2400 shillings and this is 10,000 already off from 40,000 shillings. In the past, FUFA has been paying VAT on the stadium hire expence, but now URA has registered FUFA for VAT and URA agents are at the gates to collect serial numbers of each ticket and compute their money which they promptly collect.

FUFA also pays the Uganda Police for Security and Pay Namboole for the Stadium Hire. In the last 6 months, FUFA has transported the national teams (Contingent of 25) to 9 different African countries by air. The countries include Congo Brazzaville, Ghana, Mozambique, Botswana, Angola, Egypt, Southern Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

We think Ugandans should now consider asking the Government to waive the taxes or Namboole to be used without charges or not to pay the police to provide security for Ugandans who are already paying taxes elsewhere.
Uganda is currently the only country in the world where the Government collects taxes instead of financing the national soccer matches.
