Women members of parliament under the Uganda women parliamentarian Association have asked the new minister in the ministry of Gender labour and Social development Hajat Janat Mukwaya to initiate a process of electing women councils. The member of Uganda women parliamentary Association who is also the member of parliament for Kamwenge district Dorothy Nshaija said that its unfortunate to see the biggest number on the country’s population not having leadership at local councils in the country.

Nshaija also called for recruitment of more midwives to attend to pregnant mothers in health facilities to reduce on maternal mortality rate . She demanded for recruitment of more teachers to match with number of students and construction of more class rooms with good toilet facilities with the girl child given sanitary pads. She said that government should use this five years to make sure there is a technical and secondary school in each sub county.
The woman Member of Parliament for Gulu district Betty also called for making women groups in all districts access women enterprise funds without unfavourable conditions.

The commissioner children and youth, Mondo Kyateka, reveals that they are in the final stages of forwarding the reviewed Children’s act of 1996 and the early childhood development policy to cabinet for approval before the end of this year. Speaking at the launch of a report dubbed The unfinished business of girl’s rights by Plan International today in Kampala, as the world also prepares to mark the day of the girl child slated for 11^th October, Kyateka confirms that the law and policy are a step towards providing maximum protection to the girl child of this land from all sorts of abuses and dehumanizing acts performed against them by members of the community.

He further calls for massive investment from all stakeholders to the girl child since they greatly contribute to faster economic and social development of the nation. However, the country director, Plan Uganda, Fikru Abebe, calls on government and all stakeholders to invest in high quality education to keep the girl child in school as they also contribute to national and global development.

Meanwhile, one of the adolescent we happened to speak, to a one Nakyeyune Norah, highlights the huge problems girls go through which she says have hindered them from attaining success in life and further reminds the nation to treat them the same way they do boys.
