Prime minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has urged the academia to device powerful initiatives to discover new knowledge to support business development in the region. While as trade has existed for ages, most people still use traditional methods which are not sustainable, bear less profits, and require modification.

According to the Prime Minister, the global challenge of unemployment can be addressed by the academia through business innovations to grow small and medium enterprises through research. This he said while officiating at the ongoing 20th Makerere University business school (MUBS) Nakawa annual International Management Conference under the theme “Harnessing opportunities for business development.”

During the conference, MUBS principal Prof. Waswa Balunywa reported to the Prime Minister that he is disappointed over Government failure to grant MUBS a university status which they have for long  asked for and met the requirements.

The Wallace Global Fund (WGF) supports activities at the global and national level, and will consider significant local or regional initiatives offering the potential to leverage broader national or global impact.

The program areas are; Natural Resources, Civic Engagement, Media and Leadership, Justice and Women’s Human Rights.

The mission of the Wallace Global Fund is to promote an informed and engaged citizenry to fight injustice, and to protect the diversity of nature and the natural systems upon which all life depends.

WGF Women’s Human Rights Program

Population pressures exacerbate many of the fundamental obstacles to sustainable development: degradation of natural resources, income disparity, gender inequality and poor maternal and child health.

The Fund believes that it can uphold women’s human rights by expanding their reproductive health choices, thereby reducing unwanted childbearing and improving the lives of women and their families.

The Fund seeks policy initiatives which promote globally to:

  • Increase access to contraceptives
  • Increase access to emergency contraceptives
  • Improve adolescents’ ability to make informed choice and obtain Quality reproductive health services
  • Increase access to safe abortion
  • Resource mobilization in europe
  • Resource mobilization in u.s.
  • Eradication of female genital mutilation
  • Promote microenterprise
  • Ensure that millennium development goals (MDGS) prioritize reproductive health

Grant proposals are processed and reviewed on a continuous basis.

The average grant size is $50,000, with actual grant awards ranging up to $400,000.

The Fund makes both one-year and multi-year grants.

Wallace Global Fund will consider proposals for either core support or project-specific support.

WGF does not fund purchase of land, capital construction, profit-making businesses, debt reduction, endowment campaigns, fundraising drives/events, or scholarships, tuition assistance or other forms of personal financial aid.

Deadline: Grants are being reviewed on a quarterly basis in March, June, September and December.

The World Bank in partnership with the Agency for Promoting Sustainable Development Initiatives (ASDI) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development will tomorrow, February 1, 2012 launch a pilot project for the promotion of bioelectricity in Uganda at Kayei Landing Site, Akokoro Sub-County,  Apac District.

Over 100 households in the area around Kayei Landing Site stand to benefit from 10 kilowatts of bioelectricity that will be produced by the project using a $150,000 grant from the World Bank-administered Africa Renewable Energy Access (AFREA) Trust Fund.

“The immediate target of this project is to produce electricity to power a cooling and drying facility for fish preservation, lighting for 100 households and powering a water purification plant,” said Sam Olili Egir, ASDI Project Manager.

AFREA, which is funded by the Netherlands Government, is meant to promote the development of renewable energy and accelerate access to modern energy through a number of Bank-executed and Recipient-executed activities, including technical assistance, advisory studies and investment grants targeted at various institutions including non-governmental organizations.

“This is the only project funded by the World Bank Biomass Energy Initiative for Africa in the category of increasing power capacity with bioelectricity as a pilot that will be replicated not only in Uganda but Africa as a whole,” said Syed Waqar HaiderSector Leader for Biomass Energy Initiative for Africa.

The Apac project involves technology transfer for electricity generation from biodegradable wastes (water hyacinth, grass, kitchen waste, market waste, fish waste, agricultural waste etc) for electricity generation. The project is intended to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of providing electricity to a rural community from renewable energy and how decentralized production of renewable energy out of biomass can contribute to solving the energy shortage in rural areas.

The project is located at the Kayei Landing Site in a community with about 5,000 people that have no electricity access. The major economic activity in this area is fishing resulting in large volumes of fish and fish waste. The fish are normally sold off fresh and cheaply because of lack of refrigeration. The availability of electricity would allow for refrigeration and could improve the viability of the fishing business.

It is expected that after the project is completed within a year, the beneficiary households will substitute biogas for kerosene in their homes and petrol used by generators in the village. The project has training and research component to promote more efficient feedstock supply and efficient use of biogas slurry

It seems Uganda Revenue Authority is copying a seed from National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC). This is because after NWSC closed all its cash offices across the country for electronic payments, Uganda Revenue Authority is also phasing out its cash offices.

Electronic payments are a new phenomenon in Uganda. In fact it was launched in East Africa’s third economy last financial year.

James Odong, one of the commissioners of Uganda Revenue Authority says that their customers no longer need to spend time in line waiting to clear their taxes when electronic payments system is in place.

Odong has told informers and journalists in Kampala that the tax body is implementing modernization initiatives to improve customer services through E payment.
