Cars moving along Masaka road

Four people died today morning along the Masaka – Mbarara road when a taxi had a head on collision with a Toyota Premio.

According to the Police’s Patrick Onyango, the accident happened on Sunday morning at about 5am at Nkalwe, Kkingo sub county involving taxi number UAW 361S from Kyankwanzi heading to Kisoro with a Premio Reg; No;UAY 613I from Mbarara to Kampala.

He says the taxi overturned several times killing the four occupants and injuring 10 others.

“All those in the premio whose number we are yet to establish are safe.Victims have been rushed to Masaka hospital and the bodies taken to the mortuary,” he said.

Onyango says inquiries over the cause of the accident have commenced.

Masaka road has in the recent past become notorious for accidents. Efforts by the traffic police in the recent past had seen some  reduction of reported cases of accidents along the route.

There have been campaigns such as Fika Salama that were introduced to curb over-speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and impounding cars that are not road worthy  among other measures.

Leaders from Kisoro district led by Bufumbira North mp John kamara have threatened not to vote for NRM come 2016 presidential elections if they are not given a district.

The leaders from four sub counties of Bufumbira north say that the area has been marginalized with bad roads and bridges yet it is a tourism center where government collects a lot of revenue for the country.

MP Kamara says the proposed Mutanda district which borders with congo has a number of big markets serving both countries , Bwindi national park , minerals like lime stone and if curved out , they will have the capacity to maintain it.

He says kisoro is now one of the biggest district in the country compared to those that have been curved out.

The mp says that it will be difficult to convince the people to vote for the current government if they are denied a district.

Kamara says he has bought some ambulances for the mothers in the area but they cannot be used because of poor roads.

Heads of private universities operating in Uganda are calling on the government to waive taxes levied on them to enable them provide subjects units that need more finances to be taught in these institutions.

The chairman African region and executive director, Cavendish University, Dr. Ketrine Salati, many courses need huge sums of money to be taught yet they are paying heavy taxes to the government making it difficult for them to have some of these courses at these institutions.

Dr. Ketrine also adds that the university that is slated to have its first graduation ceremony towards the end of the week has already embraced the east African community common market by spread its branches to Tanzania, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda.

He says they are also establishing learning centers in upcountry areas, with two already running in Soroti and Kisoro districts.
