Parliament of Uganda

With just few days left to the 2nd Presidential Debate, a cross section of MPs say that all presidential candidates should focus on how they do promote security in the interests of Ugandans when debating on the foreign policies. The 2nd Presidential debate is due for Saturday 13th at Serena hotel in Kampala and all the presidential candidates have confirmed attendance.

Jie County MP- Katido District, Lokii Abrahams Peter, says President Museveni should focus on the issues of security in the neighboring countries like South Sudan which is a major key for development. Palisa District Woman MP Judith  Mary Amoit  says President Museveni is a tasted and experienced leader in matters of foreign policies, he has mediated Burundi peace Talks and has done much to create harmony with the foreign countries. She says he has the competence to answer any question shot at him on foreign policies.

Lubaga South MP John Ken Lukyamuzi is skeptical about President Museveni appearing for the presidential debate. He says that President Museveni will have a challenge in the debate to answer questions on the foreign policies, corruption, Uganda’s international debt, among others

The  spokesperson and head of media Team NRM campaign Task force 2016 Mike Kennedy Sebalu says that the two  sides are working, looking at the president’s tight schedule for campaigns to harmonize it so as he is having time for the debate he skipped in round one. Sebalu says that people should ignore the earlier media reports that the president termed the presidential debate as a high school debate, saying he could have been misquoted by the media. He asked the other seven presidential candidates standing against president Yoweri Museveni  that they should not over rate themselves against Yoweri Museveni. He also dispels claims that NRM candidate skipped the first round presidential debate for 2016 election because he could not afford to stand for long hours during the debate.

Other presidential candidates expected  included Amama Mbabazi, Forum for Democratic Change presidential flag bearer Kizza Besigye, Professor Venansius Baryamureeba, Rtd. Major General Benon Biraaro, People’s Development Party leader Dr. Abed Bwanika, Independent Candidate Joseph Mabirizi and the only woman presidential candidate Maureen Kyalya.

The last presidential debate held on 16th January 2016  lasted for three hours.

Justice James also rubbishes the comment made by the NRM candidate, who was absent from the debate, who said that the debate was a secondary school debate as he says this was intended to help the nation get to know what the would-be presidents have in stock for the nation.

Flag UgThe organizers of the first ever presidential live debate in Uganda are maintaining that all candidates must be present for the debate and will not give room for their representatives. According to the chairman of the elders’ forum of Uganda who are part of the organizers of the live debate, Justice James Ogola maintains that they have been in touch with all the eight candidates as well as their representatives discussing issues to do with the event and how it will be run.
There are still unconfirmed rumors that the NRM flag bearer will not attend the debate which the organizers have distanced but maintain that if he fails to appear then nothing will be done but to have those who will be present to articulate their issues.
The debates are slated for 15th January and early February this year and will mainly focus on national, regional and international issues.
