Lewis Hamilton claimed his fifth world championship title after finishing fourth in the Mexican Grand Prix to establish himself among the Formula One greats.

Red Bull‘s Max Verstappen was victorious in the race, finishing ahead of Sebastian Vettel who finished second and Kimi Raikkonnen who was third on the podium.

But in the end that mattered little for Hamilton, who now can’t be caught in the drivers’ standings with two more races left in the season.

Ever since joining the McLaren as an intelligently talented 13 year old, Hamilton’s stock has only gone up as he achieved the rare feat of meeting expectations with results.

His supreme talent has guided him to four world championships in the past five years to go alongside the one he won in just his second ever season, all the while breaking the mould from what many still consider to be a privileged, white man’s sport to sit on the cusp of becoming the sport’s greatest-ever champion.

After all, 33-year-old Hamilton is just the first black driver to race in Formula One, let alone win world championships.

Hamilton struggled to the end despite feeling vibrations in his car, fretting over his tyres in exasperated radio exchanges, and haemorrhaging time as his rubber gave him a mighty migraine.

Formula One multiple champions

The Briton now sits joint second on the overall list of Formula One world champions, level with Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio but still two behind Michael Schumacher whose seat at Mercedes Hamilton moved into when the seven-time champion retired for the second time in 2012.

Lewis Hamilton is on the edge of winning his fifth Formula One title following his victory in the Japanese Grand Prix yesterday. The Briton was dominant as title rival Sebastian Vettel ran into trouble attempting to gain ground from eighth place on the grid.

Sebastian Vettel’s gamble however exploded in his face when he crashed into Red Bull‘s Max Verstappen and almost handed the world title to the Mercedes driver. The result means Ferrari‘s Vettel is 67 points behind Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton is now in a position to win his fifth world championship with victory at the United States Grand Prix next time out

Lewis Hamilton will win the world championship if he wins the United States Grand Prix and Sebastian Vettel fails to finish second. Hamilton can also claim the title by outscoring Vettel by eight points in Austin.

It was a calming race at the front, Hamilton so in control on his way to his sixth win in seven races that he at one point asked his team if they were still there, so little did they need to talk to him.

It seems strange to think it now, but it is not that long since Hamilton and Mercedes looked like they were in a real dogfight for this title but it seems like the Briton is going to make it happen.

Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain celebrates his victory in the Italian F1 Grand Prix in Monza.

Mercedes were investigated on the grounds the tyres were below the minimum permitted pressure.

However the stewards allowed Hamilton to keep his victory after ruling Mercedes had followed safe operating procedures.

Hamilton when faced with claims of below minimum start pressure recommended by Pirelli stated that it was not his job. “I don’t know what to say about it, it’s not my job,” said the Briton, He added; “Today I’ve been so happy with how the car has been in the race. “Formula One is about running to the bare minimum. For whatever reason today, 0.3psi – if that’s what it was – 0.3psi… It makes no difference to the car, particularly on one tyre. I’m sure Pirelli could prove it. That’s not the reason we won.”

Hamilton finished over 25 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, with Felipe Massa completing the podium for Williams.

Mercedes teammate and championship challenger Nico Rosberg was forced to retire when his engine blew with two laps to go as he challenged Vettel for second place.

The win means Hamilton now leads with a 53-points advantage in the drivers’ world championship with seven rounds of the 19-race championship remaining.

Formula One world champion and MercedesLewis Hamilton managed to see off a Williams threat to win the British Grand Prix on Sunday 5th, 2015.

Hamilton lost the lead off the line after being bypassed by Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas at the start after an early safety car stage but overturned matters against the Williams’ during the first round of pit stops.

The Briton also went on to survive late rain at the end of the race while teammate and championship rival Nico Rosberg bounced back from fourth to second place.

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel finished third for Ferrari, behind Rosberg, with Williams driver Felipe Massa missing out a place on the podium after leading for the first 20 laps following a blazing start.

Hamilton who previously won at Silverstone in 2008 and 2014 recorded his 38th career victory extending his lead to 17 points over team-mate Rosberg who had won three of the past four races.

The estimated 140,000 fans enjoyed what is regarded as the best race of the year so far with Hamilton becoming the third Briton, after Jim Clark and Nigel Mansell, to win three times at home

Hamilton acknowledged how Mercedes’ bad starts had “made the race for the fans” and, thanked the fans, he said:

“Thank you for coming out today and making my whole weekend, I really wanted to do it for you guys. I couldn’t have done it without you. I’m so elated. You can’t imagine how happy I am. I was tearing up on the last lap.”

Only 13 cars finished, with Sauber‘s Brazilian Felipe Nasr retiring before the start when his car was stuck in sixth gear on the track as he headed for the grid.

A virtual safety car also came into play on lap 34 when the Toro Rosso of Spaniard Carlos Sainz stopped on the runoff and had to be removed with a tractor.
