Members of Parliament sitting on the Parliamentary Committee of Trade and Industry have accused some Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) whom they say connive with some new sugar factories to help them evade taxes.

The Committee Chaired by the  MP for Fort Portal Municipality, Alex Ruhunda, while interfacing with the officials from the URA and Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) alluded that in their visit to sugar companies, they come across reports that   some URA officers who connive with these new factories to help them evade taxes for selfish gains.

Ruhunda said that if someone compares the metric tons these new sugar factories produce, it does not match with the taxes that are being paid.

He said that the new factories have found a clever way of going about taxes with URA .

Ruhunda said that it’s difficult for URA corrupt officials to use the original sugar factories to evade the taxes for their own benefit.

He also criticized the UIA managers for licensing one sugar factory to take all the monopoly of sugar production from one sub region.

Ruhunda noted that the UIA licensed Kinyara sugar works for production of sugar in Bunyoro sub region which he says undermines competition.

The URA commissioner in-charge of customs, Dicksons Kateshumbwa, however defended the authority saying it has zero tolerance to corruption and its does not tolerate any of its officers found guilty of corruption.

The Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) says that it’s battling court cases for the industrial parks land caused by double allocation of land to investors by the Uganda Lands Commission.

The Director UIA in charge of small land Medium Enterprises Division, Basil Ajar, told the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Tourism and Industry chaired by the Bulamogi MP, Keneth Lubogo, which investors are fighting each other in courts over land which was caused by the Uganda land commission when it gave the same piece of land to more than one investor.

Basil Ajar also disclosed that the development of Namanve Industrial park is behind schedule over inadequate funding for infrastructure development in this desired park.

He says that the Uganda Investment Authority requires 500 billion shillings for Namanve Industrial park infrastructure development to provide water and sewerage, electricity, roads and telecommunication facilities but it’s given only 5 billion shillings per financial year which cannot push the Authority fast so as it’s utilized to the maximum by the investors.

Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) has wooed visiting Germany Investors to pick interest in Uganda due to Country’s glaring investment potentials that are lying idle in Uganda.

Meeting a group of 30 visiting Germany business men last week, Dr. Frank Sebowa,the Executive Director, UIA  said Uganda is a land to many unexploited opportunities and reliable weather and that investing in such an area would be worthy while for business.

He explained the coming of such investors will help to reform this country in subsequently providing job for our fast growing population.

The investors are responding to a recent visit by President Yoweri  Museveni who visited German where he meet potential investors whom him encouraged to invest in the country.
