The Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) has  revealed plans of  setting tough guidelines for its members that have to be strictly followed in a bid  to save the environment which they say is being degraded at an alarming speed.

Godfrey Ssali, an official at UMA while discussing a paper on climate change justice, mentioned that among the guidelines they had to set include; that all companies should  have environmental desks, harvest water, set garbage selection centers, avoid waste spill over into wetlands and water sources nearby avoid emission of dangerous gases among others.

He further notes that most their members were very reluctant to practicing environment friendly manufacturing but that now that guidelines have been set, this will come to pass  given that the country is moving towards setting up more industrial parks where now factories and industries are supposed to be built.

However, discussions at UMA show grounds in Lugogo, Youths under the Youth Go Green Umbrella  also reminded government to include them in the environmental policies and programmes being drafted to equip them with the relevant and basic knowledge on how to save the environment to combat climate change effects.

The former Executive Director of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) Engineer, Sebugga Kimeze has warned the companies and individuals seeking to construct quality structures and house units to look for laboratories to test the materials before ordering them in bulk.

While speaking to journalists this on Monday at Uganda Manufacturer’s Association (UMA) conference hall in Kampala on the going Construction and Interiors Design Exhibition 2016, Kimeze revealed that there were some construction materials on market currently which are fake and that it requires people to first test the materials they procure in order to avoid losses.

He said that construction materials can be subjected to testing before use in private and Uganda National Bureau of standards laboratories available in the country.

Kimeze said that due to fake construction materials purchased on market ,the architecture engineers are not able to make actual technical specifications of the facility are building and completing it in time and that this brings about losing some contracts from clients.

He also said that the construction   exhibition is important for consumers to provide an opportunity for various stakeholders in the construction industry to meet and share ideas and information; display their products, services and technology and receive instant feedback from current and potential customers.
