The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has advised donors , and advocates of the Millennium Development Goals to invest in spraying of DDT to put an end to the Malaria epidemic instead of wasting resources on Mosquito nets.

Addressing members of the Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Millennium Development Goals, kagada said the spraying DDT would be more effective in fighting malaria than the Treated Insecticide treated mosquito nets.

Giving her own experience Kadaga said that even with a mosquito net at home, someone can be subjected to a mosquito bite outside their bed or during day time which can cause malaria.

Kadaga noted that all government departments and concerned parties take a decision to start spraying DDT as the best solution to stop malaria infections.

Meanwhile Kadaga stressed the need for increased health budget to ensure health facilities are closer to the people especially in the rural areas in order to realize the health related Millennium Development Goals.

She says failure to access health facilities by mothers contributes to the high child and maternal mortality which need to be addressed.

The mp elect for Budadiri west Nandala Mafabi together with the mp elect for Aru county Odonga otto have written to chief justice Benjamin odoki over the coming election for the speaker and deputy speaker position in parliament.

Aruu County MP, Odonga Otto

The two are candidates for the two positions but say that they need special attention since they are opposition MPs. They say that since the chief justice will be the presiding officer he should follow the rules.

They say that he should allow nominations of all interested candidates then consider the use of secret voting and allocate each candidate adequate time to campaign and seek consent of the members of parliament as provided for under rule 4 of Parliament.

Mafabi will be standing with Rabecca Kadaga of NRM while Odonga will be contesting with Jacob Oalanya of NRM.

Otto also said that he is forced to start in order to see that religious sentiments are avoided. He says that it is not in order to have a protestant speaker and the deputy speaker also as a protestant.

The 375 newly sworn in Members of parliament will on Thursday have their first sitting in which they elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
