The mayor of Jinja municipality, Majid Batambuze is calling on the Central Government to consider increasing the budgetary allocations for the tourism sector as this will facilitate faster growth for the sector. Mr. Batambuze now refers to Kenya which he says has for a long time been investing in its tourism sector which has now seen the country attract more tourists hence registering a boost in their nationals economy and its upon this that he urges the govt of Uganda to consider increasing the tourism budget to boost the sector.

Jinja Municpality Mayor, Majid Batambuze

He reveals that the facilities that support the growth of the tourism sector like, roads, hotels among others are not meeting the required standard hence affecting the growth of the tourism sector.

Jinja now bags between UGX.70 million in poor seasons to UGX.130 million in good seasons through tourism which money is used by the district to develop the fading tourism sites in the area.

But with this little money, the district cannot afford to fulfill its plans of setting up a five star hotel, constructing roads leading to the tourism sites and maintaining the existing sites.

However, the town clerk Francis Byabagambi notes that a number of initiatives are still in the pipeline to have Jinja’s tourism potential resurrected to have tourists spend more than a week in the area touring different sites.

Currently tourists can only spend a maximum of not more than a week in Jinja following limited tourism sites in the area. Jinja district has a number of tourism sites namely, the Bujagali falls, source of the Nile among others.

Uganda CultureWhile Uganda looks forward to the visit of Pope Francis later in 2015, the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has embarked on a strategic marketing plan for the Country to maximize the benefits of the proposed visit of the Pope to the Country.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Tourism Board Stephen Asiimwe said that the Board is focusing on engaging churches within the country and across the region to mobilize and invite people to visit the country at the same time.

Asiimwe says if that is done it will boast Uganda’s revenue generation.

Asiimwe believes the tourism industry should take advantage of the big numbers who are likely to attend the pope’s visit in Uganda to market the sector.

He said that the Uganda Tourism Board is also in talks with different embassies and airlines to help mobilize Christians and facilitate their travels to the country during that time. He said that if well prepared Uganda can reap big from this historical visit.

Pope Francis announced recently that he will make his first visit to Africa later this year with stops in Uganda and the Central African Republic and Government has already put in place a Cabinet subcommittee led by the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda to plan for the Pope’s visit.

The United State government has expressed interest to boost tourism sector in Uganda by directly investing and supporting Uganda wild life authority.

United States ambassador to Uganda Jerry P. Lanier  briefed the minister for tourism and heritage professor Ephraim Kamuntu of his government intention.

The ambassador Jerry P. Lanier told the minister that they have considered the tourism among other projects but they were concerned about the efficiency of Uganda wild life authority and wanted to know the status of the board before releasing the funds.

Professor Kamuntu informed the delegation that the appointment of the board was long due pending a report by the commission of inquiry into UWA.

The minister noted that one of the challenges the ministry is facing is conflict between wild life authority and human resettlement because game reserves have not been fenced off from encroachers.
