Uganda registers progress towards human development – Report

A new UNDP human development report 2015 indicates that Uganda has registered progress towards human development mainly in regions that are benefiting from PRDP since the year 2006 to date with the report indicating improvement from 0.448% in 2002/6 to 0.463% in 2012/13 representing a growth rate of 0.5% per annum for the whole country.

Work is intrinsic to human development.

With the above statistics, the report now confirms that Uganda continues to register low human development trends since the country’s index falls below human development index cut – off value of 0.550% with the performance of PRDP region with the HDI of 0.431% remains below the national average but the report confirms that the highest contribution to the HDI comes from the health index followed by education with the income index making the lowest contribution.

However on reading the premier’s speech, the third deputy premier, Hon. Kirunda Kiveyijinja confirms that government is fully aware that the northern region is still facing a number of challenges despite the continued support from development partners and government its self adding that more programmes geared towards direct improvement of human lives direct from households are still to come.

UNDP to give women jobs, calls for applications

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has called for applications from qualified women to fill its vacant posts including the post of national programme specialist (UN women).

Because of this the government of Uganda is committed to UN reform and has requested the UN system in the country to accelerate its efforts towards greater harmonization and strengthened coordination and align itself strongly in support of the Paris declaration and Accra Agent for Action.

So in its spirit the UN has articulated a unified vision in its new United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2010/2014 which states that it “seeks to support the capacity of Uganda to achieve the national development plan, with focus on equity and inclusion, peace and recovery, population and sustainable development.

UNDP Somalia Internship

The UNDP Somalia Country Office, based in Nairobi, is looking for interns in various disciplines. Students shall be selected for internships that relate either to the organization’s strategic activities or to administrative or technical functions.

Required Skills and Experience:

Enrolled in a bachelors/masters programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship.
Proficiency in English required. Fluency Somali or in Arabic is an asset;
Computer literate in standard software applications.
Demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Internship assignments vary in length, however, they will normally last no less than six weeks and no more than twelve months.

Application deadline is 31 December.
