The member of parliament for Labwor county in Abim district, Micheal Ayepa, has tasked the Uganda national examinations board executive secretary Dan Odongo to release the primary leaving results of her daughter.

Ayepa made the demand as the executive secretary was appearing before the parliamentary  education committee of parliament chaired by Mbale woman MP, Connie Nakayenze Galiwango,  to defend of the board.

Ayepa said that her child is innocent and should not be punished for the incompetence of the board that failed to hire trusted people that could manage exams and saying that he wants his daughter’s results released as ‘she has suffered enough.’

Ayepa further revealed that the girl was meant to sit for the exams three years ago but due to an accident he chose to keep her at home as she recovered and when she finally sat for the exams UNEB decided to withhold them.

The executive secretary Dan Odongo said that the results were with held after three different committees confirmed that the students could have engaged in activities of cheating.

Odongo revealed that the pupils were found to have answered the questions in the same way and failed the same questions in the same manner which is questionable.

If you asked the average student what their goal was in school, majority would say to get an A or to highly excel at the exams- in short, to pass on to the next class or level. That is a good goal by any standards but is it enough? Should they not be aiming at acquiring knowledge and skills that will effectively give them the good life they deserve?

Getting good grades is in no way a sign that no knowledge or skill has been acquired; however, sadly that is the case most of the time.

According to Mathew Bukenya, the UNEB Executive Secretary, 59.8 per cent of those who sat their A-Level exams scored the minimum two principal passes required for university admission; these total up to 19,298 students. There are some tertiary institutions that will accept less than the minimum requirement but it is safe to say that some of these students will be left with no options open to them. The question asked then is: have they been equipped for this time? Can they be employed- let alone create jobs? Even for those who make it to the tertiary institutions, will they be a burden to the nation on graduating or will they become the job creators urgently needed in the nation after the three to five years spent there?

The answer is NO and therefore deliberate steps have to be taken to address this. The million dollar question is: Where is the problem? Once we get that answer we can find out if there is any desire for this hole to be plugged- and how. The Ugandan government and the Ministry of Education should set up a commission of inquiry to thoroughly investigate this in light of the nation’s future, and provide solutions.

Mr Matthew Bukenya the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) Executive Secretary has this morning released the 2014 Advanced Level results. During the press conference held in the Ministry of Education boardroom a number of figures were supplied highlighting a lower registration and exam completion rate from the previous year.

The reduced number of candidates in an increasing population is cause to worry; it also brings up the question of why this trend. Another worrisome point noted is the increased malpractice cases that have almost doubled from 2013’s 74 cases to 133. The Minister of Education Ms. Jessica Alupo who was present for the occassion asked for an investigation into the matter.

It was however noted that the 2014 candidates had a better performance than their 2013 counterparts.

He also said that results of upto 1,603 candidates had been withheld due to suspected involvement in various forms of malpractice that included external assistance and impersonation among others.

He says these students are from a total of 43 districts across the country.

Over 8,700 scouts were deployed across the country to ensure that the exams are leakage free.

Meanwhile the minister for education and sports JessicaAlupo has noted a reduction in the number of candidates who register but do not sit for the exams.

She has also asked district leaders to work towards changing the attitudes of their people towards education.

UNEB Chairman Fagil Mande says the 2012 performance was good but there is still a lot that needs to be done to improve even further.

The Uganda National Examinations Board has refuted allegations that it lacks funds to facilitate the marking of examinations scripts.

Media reports indicated this week that the lack of the funds could lead to the delayed release of the exam results for this year’s exams.

However, addressing the media this morning, the board secretary Matthew Bukenya rubbished the reports as mere baseless rumours saying the government has released enough money to cover the entire examinations exercise.

He said the government through the ministry of education released 18.5bn shillings between the 8th and 21st November this year.

Bukenya says 80% of the money has been sent to the marking centers and that the teachers are fully facilitated and are already stationed at the centers for marking.

Bukenya adds that the money is meant to cover accommodation and facilitation for the teachers, marking fees, processing of results and purchase of marking material.

The Ministry of Education says it is to take action against all Schools that barred  students from sitting their final Exams because of none payment of third term school fees.

This follows reports that some schools stopped students from sitting for their exams on grounds that they had not completed paying their fees.

The Minister of Education and Sports Jessica Alupo, says Head teachers should not use UNEB exams as an avenue  to collect dues from students as they should have done that during the course of the term.

She described this as a violation of  human rights because everyone has the a right to attain education.

Alupo noted that the Ministry will put in place a committee to investigate such cases and later take action against schools and head teachers who are culprits.

A’ Level examinations kicked off yesterday with students sitting for their economics paper and biology.
