Melyvn Lorenzen, Werderbremen striker has not yet decided his commitment with Uganda

The 21-year-old will not feature in Africa Cup of Nations qualification match when Botswana will take over Uganda Cranes on Saturday June 4, 2016.

“Decision time [for Lorenzen] will be after the match against Botswana,” Uganda FA communications manager Ahmed Hussein said.

He impressed for Uganda Cranes in a 2-0 defeat friendly match played with Zimbabwe  at Rufaro stadium in Harare on Tuesday.

Lorenzen was born in London and qualifies to play for both Uganda and German through his father and mother respectively.

Uganda coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic praised the contribution Lorenzen had made during his time with the squad.

“We shall definitely miss the extra impetus he would have brought to the team as we saw in the friendly match against Zimbabwe,” the coach said.

“So for now we shall concentrate on the able players we have in the team to accomplish our mission.”

The coach will be worried about the fitness of striker Faruku Miya, who plays in Belgium for Standard Liege, after he missed the loss to Zimbabwe with concussion.

The Cranes will also be without US-based midfielder Mike Azira, who has chosen not to join the squad stating due to fatigue after a busy MLS season with Colorado Rapids.

Moses Oloya also misses out having stayed in Vietnam in order to recover from injury.

Uganda are level on seven points with Burkina Faso in Group D, but the Cranes are second on the table because the Stallions have the better head-to-head record between two.

President Museveni has commended the International University of East Africa for their ability to extend affordable and accessible University and professional tertiary education to Ugandans through well designed programs. The President, represented by the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, was presiding over the second graduation of the International University of East Africa.
The ceremony took place at the University’s campus in Kasanga.  The President commended the University for its national, regional and international outlook. He said this was in line with the vision held by the National Resistance Movement political organization of regional integration.
‘It is only when all the African people have attained high levels of literacy and skills that any individual African state will be able to claim total liberation’, Museveni observed.
He appealed to all Universities in the country to consider designing and offering courses that equip the youth with skills that are desired by today’s job market. He also urged the Ministry of Education and Sports to constantly provide career guidance manuals to students especially at secondary school level.
The Chancellor of the University Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile said the vision of the University is to be the technological university of choice in East and Central Africa. The International University of East Africa was founded five years ago by Mr. Alwi Hassan. The ceremony was attended by the University Council and Administrative staff.

Makerere university authorities are not about to change their stand on the tuition payments system.

The students yesterday started a demonstration protesting a new requirement for private sponsored students to pay 60% of the tuition fees by the sixth week of the semester if they are to continue to attend classes.

University spokesperson, Ritah Namisango says that the decision to have such a system was reached by the university management, senate and council.

Namisanago however says that the vice chancellor has already requested student leaders to write a petition containing their grievances and their proposals for more scrutiny.

She maintains that after receiving the petition, a meeting will be convened involving both student leaders and university management for a way forward.

Police has fired teargas to disperse Makerere university students.

The Police Commandant Kampala Metropolitan Andrew Felix Kaweesi is now addressing the students after he made university administration.

He is calling for calm saying the vice chancellors needs more time to consult other stake holders like the university council before a decision can be made

University leaders in Uganda have expressed concern over the poor education curriculum that the country follows saying it has contributed to poor education standards and caused graduates to be seekers on job market.

The University vice chancellors made the remarks at their 3rd annually conference under the theme “universities and the changing employment” held at Lake Victoria Serena resort in Entebbe.

Prof. John Ddumba Sentamu, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University

Makerere University vice chancellor, Prof. J. Ddumba Ssentamu revealed that the current university curriculum has a mismatch with the job market compared to the one used during the 1980s.

Prof. Ssentamu criticizes the plan by the government to put much emphasis on secondary and primary education and leaving out tertiary education saying it’s a great threat to this nation.

He advises that government to re-focuses on supporting tertiary institution education so as to have better products of graduates that will serve the country.

However, retired court judge, Prof. George Kanyaihamba noted that Uganda’s education problem is much bigger and needs to be dealt with at national level but not at sector level.

The forum running under the theme, “universities and the changing employment context in Africa” seeks to find solution to the sector’s problem and have the tertiary institution curriculum revised to suit the current demands of the job market.
