Government has so far closed a total of 62 international schools countrywide that it says have illegally been operating in Uganda with no license, no proper structures or a teaching curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES)

Pupils of Bristish School Kampala move around their compound. The Education ministry says some international schools have been operating without licenses and have poor structures with no teaching curriculum approved by the ministry of education.

Among the schools are some that were operating under Bridge International Academy in Uganda from Nursery to Primary level.

Their closure comes after the Worker’s MP, Margaret Rwabushaija, raised the matter to Parliament recently which prompted the ministry of education to investigate.

It is alleged the schools never went through the criteria of registering and getting licensed although they have been operating since 2013.

Janet  Museveni, the minister of education  reported to parliament that  schools with bad infrastructure had earlier been been given an interim period on which to operate in the temporary structures but that the period expired without the administrators upgrading to safe guard the lives of pupils.

She said such bad school structures could not promote good hygiene among children and promote the required teacher student’s interactions.

Janet therefore directed that such schools  closed at the end of this second term and their children transferred to other UPE schools around those closed.

She added that these schools will only be reopened after they have satisfied the ministry of education requirements.

Members of Parliament who included the woman MP for Kumi Municipality, Monica Amoding ,Mitima district Woman MP, Jovah Kamateka, said that schools especially ones operate in poor environmental conditions because of lack of inspection .

The speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga asked Janet Museveni to also ensure that the land of public schools is protected from land grabbers.

The vice chairperson of African network for the prevention and protection against child abuse and neglect who also doubles as the woman MP for Namutumba district Florence Mutyabule has called upon government to consider feeding pupils from hard to reach districts.

Many grils still dropping out of school

Mutyabule said that if government is to get better result from Universal Primary Education schools, it has to also provide food to pupils.

But President Yoweri Museveni has insisted on numerous occasions that providing lunch should be the responsibility since the government is paying for the education in UPE schools.

Mutyabule says that even if there is no policy that compels government to feed the pupils government is supposed to make sure that everyone plays the role they are supposed to play in the children upbringing.

She however said that for the meantime government should sensitize the parents on their roles. She says that government should create awareness among parents about the roles played by government and parents

Meanwhile the state minister of education in charge of primary education said that government is doing everything possible to educate the parents about their roles. He says that free education as stated does not mean that they stop playing their roles as parents. He however called upon stake holders to help government and educate parents about the components of free education.
