Uganda government asked to reconsider lunch for UPE schools

The vice chairperson of African network for the prevention and protection against child abuse and neglect who also doubles as the woman MP for Namutumba district Florence Mutyabule has called upon government to consider feeding pupils from hard to reach districts.

Mutyabule said that if government is to get better result from Universal Primary Education schools, it has to also provide food to pupils.

But President Yoweri Museveni has insisted on numerous occasions that providing lunch should be the responsibility since the government is paying for the education in UPE schools.

Mutyabule says that even if there is no policy that compels government to feed the pupils government is supposed to make sure that everyone plays the role they are supposed to play in the children upbringing.

She however said that for the meantime government should sensitize the parents on their roles. She says that government should create awareness among parents about the roles played by government and parents

Meanwhile the state minister of education in charge of primary education said that government is doing everything possible to educate the parents about their roles. He says that free education as stated does not mean that they stop playing their roles as parents. He however called upon stake holders to help government and educate parents about the components of free education.
