Stanley Ntagali, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda has revealed his disappointments to the security officials when he was first blocked together with wife while on his away Kyando in Mayuge District.

The Arch Bishop was on his way to Kyando to mark the 133rd anniversary death of Bishop James Hannington on Monday.

He therefore asked President Museveni to inform his security officials to always treat them with respect because they don’t carry guns but rather bibles.
I was embarrassed this morning when I was being blocked from accessing this place,” Archbishop Ntagali said.
“Please advise your security people to handle us with respect. My wife was forced out of the car and had to walk, bishops and their wives carry Bibles, not guns,” the Arch Bishop added.

I have attended several functions with you at State House and elsewhere but never been treated like this,” he continued.

Arch Bishop Ntagali

Arch Bishop Ntagali asked President Museveni to inform his security officials to always treat them with respect because they don’t carry guns but rather bibles.

President Museveni also took part in the prayers having arrived at 2:40pm. He was received by Archbishop Ntagali, Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Betty Aol Ochan and ministers among others.

However, the President Museveni went on to address Ntagali’s issues saying it was a mistake for the officials to act  in that manner and he promised to address the issue.

It’s a mistake and there is need to teach them. But I think they are overwhelmed by the numbers especially to avert a terrorist strike. But I am going to work on that,” the President said.

The president went on to declare 29th October, the day Bishop Hannington was killed a public holiday citing that its only Luwum and Hannington that were killed for religion.

Of course we are having many public holidays but I think this one is unique. Like I have stated, only two bishops (Luwum and Hannington) have been martyred for religion in the last 130 years,” he said.

“We can say the public holidays are many but one more will not kill us,” he added.

President Uhuru Kenyatta revealed his intentions of not willing to change the constitution in order to run for another term in office.

This was said in an interview with Richard Quest of CNN on Friday last week, a video that was later released on Monday.

I’m not interested in a third term,” Mr Kenyatta replied while asked if he has a plan of changing the constitution.

Kenyatta also revealed that his handshake with the now African Union Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa Raila Odinga was meant to bring about development to Kenya.

We’ve said, ‘Look, we don’t have to always agree on everything. But we can agree on things Kenya, and we can agree that this issue of cyclical elections has to come to an end,'” the President said.

Among other questions, Kenyatta was also questioned of whether he is bothered by the country’s debt to the Chinese.

Kenyatta revealed why people are only focusing on China as the only lender to Kenya and not other multilateral lenders like World Bank and African Development Bank.

Why are we focusing ourselves only on one lender?” Mr Kenyatta asked.

As far as I am concerned, we have a very healthy mix of debt from the multilateral lenders — who are basically the World Bank and the African Development Bank — to bilateral lenders like Japan, China, France, all who are participating and working with us to help us achieve our objectives,”  Kenyatta added.

Kenyatta was also quizzed on China’s intentions of giving loans to African Countries.

We have an infrastructure gap that we need to fill and we are going to work with our partners across the globe who are willing to partner and to work with us.”

What would worry me is if the debt that we have incurred has gone into recurrent expenditure, has gone into paying salaries or electricity bills and so on and so forth. But what we have utilised our debt for is to close the infrastructure gap,” he said.

The Church of Uganda is in the final stages of starting its own bank in the country as some of its initiative to re-claim financial independence of the church and improving service delivery in church of Uganda.

While addressing media on Wednesday, the Arch Bishop of Uganda His Grace, Stanely Ntagali, said that each Anglican will be required to donate 500 shillings through mobile money on daily basis targeting a population of 5 million people.

He explained that this humble contribution will not only end at establishing a bank, but also improving health service, building houses to clergymen and other developments in the church.

Under this arrangement the church hopes to collect 2.5 billion from 5 million people on daily basis, which is enough to kick start the process of establishing a church of Uganda bank.

The project is to be launched on 16th October at St Luke church Ntinda. If the project succeeds, Church of Uganda Bank with follow in the footsteps of the Centenary Development Bank started in the 90s by the Catholic Church.

Like many Ugandans, Christians in the Church of Uganda prayed for Hon. Rebecca Kadaga in her re-election campaign for MP and also for her election as Speaker of Parliament. We rejoiced when the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ opened both doors for her to serve the people of Uganda again. Like many, we were, therefore, confused by the reports of her visiting her ancestral shrine to give thanks for her re-election.

We value our ancestors because we are connected to them by the relationship we have. But, we must always trust only in God. We no longer need to go through the spirits of the dead because Jesus is our hope and protector. He alone is the way, the truth and the life, as Jesus says in John 14:6.

The Church of Uganda condemns syncretism and urges her Bishops and clergy to use this opportunity to proclaim the sufficiency of Christ crucified to meet all our needs, and to work pastorally with Christians to apply this glorious truth practically in their lives.

As we approach the commemoration of the Ugandan Martyrs on 3rd June, we are challenged by the faithfulness, commitment, and witness of these youth. Their willingness to renounce the “world, the flesh, and the devil” and to joyfully embrace the crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ, even unto death, is a model for how we should all understand living a life with a single-minded focus on Jesus as the only Saviour and only Lord. There is a cost to discipleship and a great reward in following Christ.

We appeal to all Christians in the Church of Uganda, especially those serving in prominent positions in government and business, to uphold Paul’s exhortation to ‘live a life worthy of the calling you have received’ (Ephesians 4:1), to live ‘above reproach’ (1 Timothy 3:2), and to not cause others to ‘stumble’ (1 Corinthians 10:32).

Religious leaders under their body Inter Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) have banned political fundraising in worship centres during the political season. This decision was reached following a meeting on 25th June this year.

The acting chairperson of the council, who is also the Arch Bishop of the Church of Uganda, his grace most Rev. Stanley Ntagali while reading the 16 resolutions agreed upon by the council, reveals that this is one of the ways to exhibit impartiality in the coming political season by religious leaders.

Among some of the other resolutions they agreed upon are holding national prayers, holding peaceful and counselling sessions for the contestants and supporters, being guardians of the common good, distance from religious leaders who take part in politics, advise youth not to be used by politicians wrongly, urge citizens to take part in the elections, among others.

The leaders continue to make it clear that this is done to make sure that the country moves through the political season peacefully and harmoniously. The faithful also challenged the security organs not to be misused by politicians during this season and also called on parliament to pass the electoral reforms before the election time sets.

President Yoweri Museveni has reiterated his call to all church leaders in the country to intensify the sensitization of the masses on the fight against poverty and its eradication from homesteads. “As leaders, we must give equal opportunity to everybody. In the Bible, it is written that seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and the rest will be added unto you. But when I am talking about poverty eradication I say “seek ye wealth first and the rest will be easy; even the church will benefit through offertory,” he observed.

The President made the call yesterday while he and his wife, Mrs. Janet Museveni, were hosting Bishops from various dioceses of Uganda who were led by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali, who called on him at his country home at Rwakitura in Kiruhuura district.

The clerics, who were accompanied by their spouses, were on a familiarization tour of model farmers in Masaka and Kiruhuura districts who have successfully adopted modern commercial agriculture and earn huge sums of money monthly and annually.

President Museveni told the clerics the genesis of his fight against poverty in his home area that started in the 1960s during his student days where he successfully changed the mind-set of the people by teaching them to abandon nomadic life in favour of settled cattle keeping. “Most of the farmers you visited this morning were nomadic because leaders by then had not discovered the causes of their nomadic life that included the rampant tick bone diseases, lack of pasture and water. So we taught them to spray their cattle, diseases disappeared and the number of cows increased,” he said.

The President noted that their sensitization programme, which was interrupted by past regimes, was resumed in 1986 and the challenge then was to teach farmers to move from indigenous Ankole cattle that require huge chunks of land to Friesian cows that can be reared in small pieces of land yet yield a lot of milk. Mr. Museveni informed them that another challenge today is to diversify farming activities of the people of the area to include the growing of fruits and keeping chicken for eggs, among others.

The President further urged the Bishops to discourage, in the strongest terms, land fragmentation that stems from the archaic cultural practice of inheritance. He advised that profits from the consolidated land should be shared among family members but not sub-diving land.

The Arch-bishop of Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali, assured President Museveni that as clerics, they were already on the direction of economic empowerment of the people. He pledged to intensify the poverty eradication drive. “I want to assure you that we are already converted in the direction of economic empowerment of our people. We shall take it up as your messengers of development,” he stressed.

Those present included the Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, the Most Rev. Paul Bakyenga.

President Museveni President Yoweri Museveni has closed West Ankole Diocese youth convention with a strong appeal to the Ugandan youth to treasure their life saying that life is was the most precious resource that God gave to humanity.

The annual youth convention, the 9th of its kind, was organized by West Ankole Diocese under the theme “Walk Wisely” with the aim of sensitizing the youth over the need to lead a positive life that is well focused in order to realize a better future.

The convention attracted more than 10,000 youth from West Ankole Diocese and other parts of the country, was addressed by several religious leaders and educators from the Province of Church of Uganda and other visiting resource people from the United Kingdom, Australia, Rwanda and several educational institutions.

President Museveni strongly advised the youth of the need to selfishly protect and safeguard their lives from social evils such as alcoholism, smoking, pre-marital sex, drug abuse, homosexuality and many others. He cautioned them that these anti-social traits and many more that are common in Uganda today cost the youth their life or endanger it leading to the limiting of their potential with a result that their future becomes ruined. He informed them that after realizing that a big percentage of Uganda’s population was in school where they are prone to being exposed to negative forces, he supported the establishment of Patriotic Clubs in several secondary schools in the country to give social guidance to the young people on how best to manage their lives.

“Mere scientific knowledge and formal education without knowledge on how to manage your lives, is not enough. Don’t be flattered; life is a tricky journey. You need to be careful,” he warned the youth.

“I am now 70 years old and still strong. I would not have gone through all these struggles and done what I have contributed to my country if I had mishandled my life when I was young,” he added.

The President advised them to fear God and follow His teachings through the Holy Books because the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and those who fear God don’t committee crimes. He also advised them to concentrate on their education noting that in modern times, education is a must for all. He further advised them to help their parents while on holidays, be patriotic and love Uganda and the African continent.

“You have to love Uganda because you can’t be a youth or have a family when your country is in turmoil,” he said.

The President further encouraged the youth to seek guidance from their parents and their teachers on the right qualifications they need to attain in school that are on demand on the labor market in order to be able to get employment.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali, who was the key speaker stressed that the church had decided to organize such conventions tin order o educate the youth and bring them closer to the church. He noted that the youth are the future of the Church and the nation and without them there is no future for both Church and the nation.

West Ankole Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Yona Katonene reported that the main reason for convening youth conventions is advise them to attach great value to behaviour change among the young people so that they are equipped with the guiding tools early enough to avoid becoming victims of the tempting evils in the modern era. He commended the President for sparing his time to address the youth on pertinent issues of the preservation of their lives as Mr. Museveni has displayed his love and passion for the future of the youth and Uganda as a country.

The Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has described St. Janani Luwum as a political icon whose martyrdom galvanised efforts to oust the dictatorial regime of former President Idi Amin which set the stage for the liberation of Uganda.
“We, therefore, look at the life of St. Janani Luwum not only in the religious aspect but also in the social and political aspects,” said Rugunda, adding that his life was a challenge to both political and religious leaders.
He said it was befitting to rekindle the fervent fire that was lit by Archbishop Janani Luwum to make his life and memory more celebrated at both national and international levels.
Rugunda said it was incumbent upon Ugandans to ensure that all the necessary arrangements were in place to permanently immortalise the life of St. Janani Luwum as a preeminent Christian leader and 20th century martyr.
He revealed that President Yoweri Museveni fully supported this venture and would grace the annual remembrance of Archbishop Luwum on 16th February 2015 in Mucwini, Kitgum district where he was buried.
The Premier who is also the Chairman National Organising Committee made the remarks during the launch of the International Celebration of Archbishop Janani Luwum day by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali at St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe on Monday.
This year, the Church, Government and other stakeholders are coming together to significantly expand the annual remembrance of the late Archbishop Luwum and also make it an international celebration.
Archbishop Ntagali asked for support of all dioceses, churches, Christians and all people of good will who recognise the significance and importance of a national remembrance of the life and witness of Archbishop Janani Luwum.
“The Church in Uganda, as well as the global church around the world has regarded Archbishop Janani Luwum as a martyr for the Christian faith,” said Ntagali. “He died because of his faith in Jesus Christ and his willingness to boldly proclaim it to the highest people in our land.”
Ntagali said a dedicated team of national leaders from different denominations had come together and established St. Janani Luwum Memorial Charity, chaired by the Bank of Uganda Governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile.
Archbishop Janani Luwum was brutally murdered by elements in former President Idi Amin’s Government on February 16, 1977 following a period of prolonged political upheavals at the time.
Also expected at this year’s annual remembrance of Archbishop Luwum are South Africa’s retired Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu and Church of England’s Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, who are also patrons of St. Janani Luwum Memorial Charity.
