State Minister for Finance David Bahati is among the many MPs crying foul

Several Members of Parliament have made a cry to Police and Uganda Communication Commission to intervene in the ongoing scams that are highly targeting them and other high profile people by con-men.

This comes at a time when cases of fraud are apparently being reported by almost every MP about thugs that hack into their phones and Face book accounts and con their friends’ money.

The latest is one involving Kasiro County MP, Elijah Okupa, who narrated to parliament how his number was hacked by thugs who asked money from a number of MPs claiming that Okupa was stuck in Eldorate.

Gulu Municipality MP, Lyndro Komaketch, reported that he is currently paying back 17 million shillings to friends who were conned in the same manner using his name.

Okupa asked the Uganda Communication Commission and telecommunication companies to devise means of stopping this practice.

The state minister for planning in the ministry of Finance, David Bahati is among the many MPs crying foul over this cybercrime as his  Facebook account was hacked into hence used to con the public.

The minister of Internal Affairs, Obiga Kania,  assured  the MPs that measures were being taken by both police and UCC to clear the loop holes that are still leading to such cyber-crimes.

Many Ugandans are coming to terms with the sad reality that the telephone network that brought low calling rates and several innovative products in the telephone market is no more.

After several days of rumours that Warid Telecom Uganda was in some sort of crisis, it has now been confirmed that telecom firm has been sold to the Bharti Airtel Group that owns Airtel Uganda, and Airtel firms in 16 other African countries.

Warid no more in Uganda

Warid no more in Uganda

The India based Bharti Airtel announced in a statement today that they had entered into a definitive agreement with the Warid Group to fully acquire Warid Telecom Uganda.

“The agreement aims to bring together the strengths of Airtel and Warid in Uganda and offer benefits to customers in the form of a superior and wider network, affordable voice and data services, and superior customer care,” said a press release.

Airtel hopes the acquisition of Warid the 3rd largest mobile telecom provider in Uganda with 2.8 million subscribers will add to their current 4.6 million customers in Uganda and make them a strong force to reckon with. With a customer base of 7.4 million subscribers, Airtel will have a market share of 39% in Uganda’s telecom industry.

“This happens to be the first in-market acquisition in Bharti Airtel’s history. We believe this market consolidation offers great synergies by bringing together the best of Airtel and Warid to better serve customers in Uganda,” said Manoj Kohli, MD and CEO (International) of Bharti Airtel.

Airtel is ranked the fourth largest mobile services provider in terms of customer base globally has operations in 17 African countries, with an estimated 62 customers at the quarter ended December 31at 2012.

But for many Uganda customers of Warid, the worry is on whether all the low price calling, sms and internet packages that Warid was offering will continue, and whether Airtel can continue to push the price down for the benefit of customers as Warid has been doing.

Airtel Uganda has been evicted from the controversial piece of land in Masaka for alleged illegal occupancy.

The land under contention is located on Kizungu Hill in Masaka town. The eviction comes shortly after the Masaka chief magistrate court Moses Katorogo issued a court order instructing court bailiff to evict Airtel telecommunication to vacate and relocate its mast from the disputed piece of land owned by a business man in Masaka town.

Zain now Bharti Airtel

The court order states that Airtel formerly known as celtel, later Zain constructed its mast in 2006 on a piece of land owned by Gerald Kasozi in Kizungu Hill in Masaka town without his knowledge.

The court order reads that Gerald Kasozi filed a civil suit in Masaka court in 2007 and he won the case.

The chief magistrate instructed the company to relocate and pay damages worth 23 million shillings to Gerald Kasozi but the manager of the company kept a deaf ear.

Gerald Kasozi wants Airtel Uganda vacate and relocate its mast and pay him 23 million shillings.
