Prevention of hydrocephalus is a more complex matter, as there are more possible causes. They include congenital disorder, post-infections, and cerebral hemorrhages or tumors.

However improving maternal and child health care and improving immunization coverage is believed to prevent some of the post –infectious cases.

Adequate and timely referral for treatment of hydrocephalus prevents secondary disabilities such as blindness and brain damage. Also remember that in our earlier news reports about hydrocephalus we told you that hydrocephalus, also called Water on the Brain, is a condition in which there is an abnormal build up of fluids in the cavities of the brain. The buildup is often caused by an obstruction which prevents proper fluid drainage.

The fluid buildup raises pressure inside the skull which compresses surrounding brain tissue, causing progressive enlargement and softening of the head, convulsions, and brain damage. Hydrocephalus can be fatal if left untreated. Spina bifida and hydrocephalus are very expensive conditions to manage as they require much labour and money.

A child can have both spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Approximately two third of children with spina bifida in Uganda also develop progressive hydrocephalus. Ventricles or cavities of the brain in all persons produce cerebral-spinal fluids and it is absorbed in the brain and spinal cord.

However, hydrocephalus develops if there is no balance between the cerebral-spinal fluids produced and that that which is absorbed. This can also occur with people without spina bifida. If the natural circulation of CSF is obstructed, fluid accumulates in the brain and hydrocephalus results.

The excess fluid presses on the brain causing damage to the surrounding tissue. In babies and infants where the skull is still soft, the head enlarges. This obstruction of the normal CSF pathways can be caused by abnormal brain anatomy as is the case with spina bifida. It can also be the result of meningitis (cerebral malaria), trauma or intracranial bleeding which occurs more frequently following premature birth. Hydrocephalus, also called Water on the Brain, is a condition in which there is an abnormal build up of fluids in the cavities of the brain. The buildup is often caused by an obstruction which prevents proper fluid drainage.

Many men in one way or the other face delayed ejaculation in their life time. When a man delays to reach his peak of sexual satisfaction, it is referred to as delayed ejaculation.

Dr. Joseph Sebuguzi of Ndejje health centre IV says delayed ejaculation can be short-term or lifelong problem. The doctor says that it is very normal for a man to experience delayed ejaculation from time to time if the condition is short-lived. But men should visit psychologists if the problem is long lived.

Delayed ejaculation is caused by psychological problems, stresses, chronic health conditions such as diabetes mellitus and medications, such as anti-depressants, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health condition, depression, and anxiety. So in a nutshell, Dr. Sebuguzi says delayed ejaculation may result from physical, psychological concerns or both and its treatment depends on the underlying cause.

Hopes of ailing Makindye West MP, Hussein Kyanjo to return to normal life could be more of a myth after the United Kingdom doctors told his close family members that his condition could be irreversible. Kyanjo a couple of month travelled to the United Kingdom for specialized treatment.

The UK doctors confirm that he is suffering from a condition called Dystonia. Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and difficulty in talking.

The UK doctors, according to the MP’s family members, they are still investigating to establish whether his condition hereditary, physical trauma, infection, poisoning or reaction to pharmaceutical drugs.

The doctors say that Kyanjo’s treatment is difficult because he has over stayed with the disease. But also according to doctors, the symptoms of dystonia can be minimised.

Vitiligo is a condition that leads to peeling of the skin, creating light patches on the body and some people in Buganda, central Uganda usually say day they were ‘burnt by the twins’ (mbu abalongo babokya) which is not true.

Our readers what you have to know is that vitiligo has nothing to do with the traditional thinking of the spirits of twins burning peoples faces.

The causes of vitiligo are many but in this article we shall mention a few of them:

An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy tissue. The cells are forced to produce melanin (the natural substance that give colour (pigment) to the skin are destroyed.

Such conditions leads to hyper pigmentation hence causing vitiligo- Families with links of vitiligo can also be inherited from family members and this means if one’s forefather experienced it, there is about 10% that their descendants will have it.

For some people it’s normal and common to have their hair turn from either black to brown after relaxing. Hair experts say that using poor quality products and rinsing chemicals thoroughly out of the hair can also lead to browning of the hair.

Hot combing, blow drying and too much heat applied directly to the hair also causes the hair to turn brown.

It is therefore very important to note that you use a setting hair lotion depending on the hair type and condition of the scalp.

Women should use polishers like the olive polisher in order to protect, moisturise, repair, shine and seal the hair from heat. The hair experts also advise women to protect their hair from the effect of direct heat.

It’s very important to analyze the condition and texture of the hair before treating it e.g. how thin or thick it is. Also analyse the state of your hair, is it natural, broken or colour-treated. Conditions like hair breakage, hair thinning, lack of hair growth, scalp damage and hair loss should be considered carefully when choosing which chemicals to use.
