His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, the Kabaka of Buganda

His majesty the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, has warned his subjects against taking their lives for granted by thinking that there are drugs to treat the HIV/Aids virus saying they should fully double their protection methods against the disease.

Speaking at the opening of the 25th Lukiko at Bulange Mengo on Monday, the Kabaka reminded the subjects of the ever increasing number of new infections among the populace which he says is worrying the leaders and hence the strong call to his subjects to protect themselves against contracting the disease.

He further wants government not to go ahead with its plans to amend the land act to make it compulsory for it to take land for development and later compensate the owners which the Kabaka says is very wrong and he urges govt to consider diplomatic negotiations with land owners before taking their land.

In the same Lukiko, the Kabaka also recognized and honored a number of his subjects who have excelled in serving the kingdom and the nation as a whole, among them being the late Yyvone Namaganda who died in the Buddo junior school inferno in 2008 while saving lives of her fellow pupils, Rose Kyateka who also served in the health sector among others.

With more Africans now seeking to lift the quality of drugs they consume and better the health sector on the continent, African Union member states are soon launching the African medicines agency that will be responsible for regulating as well as harmonizing the standard and quality of medicines and other health consumables to be used in Africa just like it is in Europe and America.

Speaking during the interview with the Chairman, International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO), Dr. Karadip Sehim, on why they are coming up with the agency he says;

“The population on the continent has for years used drugs from Europe, India and America which have not been fully researched and tested on Africans’ geno types which he says is very dangerous,” adding that “We now as Africans need to set up this agency so that we shall learn and regulate the kind of drugs to be used in Africa for better treatment,”Dr. Sehim says.

He further notes that Africa being a disease burdened continent, fake drugs have found their way into the region causing adverse negative effects to patients which then leads to increased health costs for both governments and the population.

Then the corporate affairs director from PFIZER one of the global pharmaceutical companies, Margaret Olele, says this move will also increase patients engagement with drug manufacturers to get to know which best drugs to produce for which disease for better cure for the Africans.

WHO Uganda advisor on tropical diseases, Mugaga Kagwa, says this agency will help solve the burden of unsafe drugs on the continent which have caused harm to 1out of 10 hospitalized individuals being admitted as a result of unsafe drugs with 8% of the people getting challenges yet 83% of these could be avoided.

Africa accounts for 15% of the world’s population with 25% global disease burden still in Africa but with limited access to quality, safe and efficacious medicines being a key contributing factor.

Health experts have raised concern over the effect of limited funding to the health sector on monitoring of service delivery.

Kumi district director health services Dr John Opolot says monitoring is not effective because of the limited resource envelop.

He says the district has 17 health units but the limited funds challenge has undermined the proper monitoring of the same.

He says unless this is addressed, it will be hard for the officials to effectively monitor services in the health sector.

The scarcity of qualified pharmacists in Uganda is constraining the growth of ventures in the health sector in Uganda and African continent in general.

The Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU), Opio Samuel says that Uganda produces 60 pharmacists per year; against the 4,000 desired every year.

He says that lack of enough pharmacists puts Uganda in a critical health position. Uganda has a pharmacist to patients’ ration of 1:100,000; against the 1:1,000 recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Opio was speaking at a function in which Abacus Pharma, a regional distributor of pharmaceutical products in Uganda handed over 80 million shillings to PSU to support the organization’s Needy Pharmacy Students scheme.

He says that encouraging investors to join the health sector would avail facilities like modern teaching laboratories, industrial training centres as well as the reagents necessary to facilitate pharmacy courses at tertiary education levels.

The Uganda National Examination Board has today released the 2011 nurses’ examination results indicating a general improvement in performance.

Announcing the results, the Executive Secretary of the Nurses Examinations Board, Helen Kataratambi said that a total of 2433 candidates sat for the exams with 49 passing with distinctions, and only 41 were ungraded.

She has decried the shortage of tutors in all the 37 nursing institutions across the country which she says is failing the operations of the institutions.

Receiving the results from the executive secretary, Education and Sports minister Jesica Alupo urged UNEB to always make use of the little available resources to produce good quality nurses if the health sector is to grow.

She also revealed that government has already approved the appointment of 80 tutors to be deployed in all the nursing institutions across the country effective next year.
