Residents in Abim District in Karamoja Sub-region have asked security officials to investigate the deaths of newborn babies at
The residents say at least five newborns have so far died in the last one week at the district hospital without clear reasons. Mr Patrick Owili, who lost his newborn last Friday, says that his baby died after nurses at the facility did not help his wife to deliver.

“I was running up and about looking for the nurses who had gone away, leaving my wife alone at the ward. She struggled alone and by the time the nurses returned, the baby had no energy even to breathe until he died shortly after,” he said. Abim hospital.
Ms Giladays Acen, another mother who lost her baby in a similar situation, said their hopes for improved services at Abim hospital after its renovation have since varnished.

Babies’s ward at Abim hospital

“We were very happy as mothers when the then FDC presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye visited Abim and government was forced to renovate the hospital, and we thought services would be fine, but they haven’t improved,” she said.
The Abim Resident District Commissioner, Mr Mpimbasa Hasahaka, confirmed the deaths of newborns and has directed the police to investigate the incidents.

But Dr Edison Atwine, the Abim hospital medical superintendent, said only three newborn babies had died and denied allegations of negligence by the medical staff.
“What we know is that three newborn babies died, not five and the cause is due to lack of oxygen, not negligence,” he said.
Dr Atwine said a new car meant for maternity child health department that the hospital received from the Health ministry is being used by the district chairperson.

“We share these cars, even as a hospital when we have problems, we borrow cars and drivers from the district, so the chairman also borrowed ours. Although the car is always with him, it remains for the hospital,” he said.
The government was forced to renovate the hospital after a controversial visit to the facility in December 2016 by Dr Kizza Besigye, a former presidential candidate.

While campaigning in the sub-region, Dr Besigye made an impromptu visit to the hospital, which had not received a facelift since it was built in the 1960s. The government was forced to renovate the hospital after a controversial visit to the facility in December 2016 by Dr Kizza Besigye, the former Forum Democratic Change (FDC) party presidential candidate.

Police in Kampala blocked the launch of a book that is thought to critic President Yoweri Museveni.unsowing

The book, titled ‘Unsowing the Mustard Seed’ reportedly seeks to contradict President Museveni’s autobiography ‘Sowing the Mustard Seed’.

The book was scheduled to be launched by anti-Museveni activists under their umbrella union Jobless Brotherhood.

They are also known for using yellow-painted pigs in their protests.

The book launch was expected to be presided over by former Supreme court Judge George Wilson Kanyeihamba.

Kampala lord mayor Erias Lukwago and former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye were also expected to attend the event.

However, Kampala North Regional Police Commander Wesley Nganizi and Wandegeya District Police Commander Moses Nanoka stormed Amazing Grace gardens, which was the venue of the event all people in attendance to disperse.

Jobless Brotherhood President Norman Tumuhimbise on the contrary says the book is not aimed at tarnishing the image of the president but rather seeks to highlight the major challenges Ugandans have faced since the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) captured power in 1986.

Tumuhimbise says that after reading Museveni’s autobiography and listening to other ‘credible’ narratives and accounts of people present during the NRA liberation struggle, he found that Museveni was short on some truths in his book which was vised to a newer version and relaunched last year.

There are currently no distribution of copies as yet for the public.

Uganda police transferred by plane, Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Dr Kizza Besigye to a detention facility in the northern district of  Moroto, over 400 kilometers from Kampala where he was arrested.

Besigye was arrested after he escaped a ’24-hour’ security surveillance at his Kasangati home in Wakiso District. He unexpectedly emerged in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) attracting frenzied crowds.

Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, declined to talk about the specifics of Besigye’s where about and he’s detention. “What I know he is in lawful custody,” Enanga said.

An Opposition team led by Sam Nangilo, FDC chairman for Moroto District, visited Dr Besigye at the detention facility. Nangilo said Besigye was being detained without recording a statement or being informed of his offences.

“He hasn’t recorded any statement. He was given a mattress, but he told me he has a cough,” Nangilo said.

Besigye has repeatedly asked police to indict him formally and remand him to a proper gazetted place instead of turning his own home into a prison.

His family said that they did not know his whereabouts.

Earlier,FDC had released a video on YouTube of Besigye “swearing-in” as president of Uganda as he and his party.

Some  of  the Members of Parliament from the main opposition party FDC  have expressed mixed feelings on blocking their presidential candidate from petitioning court over the recent concluded presidential elections. One of the senior members in FDC Elijah Okupa of Kasilo county says that it would make a difference if Col. Besigye was allowed to petition and expose the rot for court to nullify the results.

But another member Winnie Kizza, women MP from Kasese says that although the exercise was not free and fair it will be hard for the voters to chose someone they want with the use of the security agents during the exercise.

However Kampala woman mp Nabilah Sempala Nagayi also an FDC member says that although there were some irregularities with in the elections, it would not make any difference even  if the exercise for the president is repeated when the electoral commission remains the same.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye says the ongoing land grabbing across the country is a deliberate move by government to, among other things, leave Ugandans more powerless.
Addressing different rallies in Baale, Kitimbwa, Busana, Bukamba, Nazigo, Kangulumira sub counties and Kayunga town council in Kayunga district today, Dr. Besigye said the continued land grabbing is across the country apart from Kigezi sub region because there is no land to be grabbed. Besigye has asked the people of Kayunga and other parts of the country to join him in demanding for a commission of inquiry into the stolen land, review of what he calls weak land laws and that caveat should be put on all titled land.
Besigye says until there has been pressure for the above demands, government, its officials and some clan leaders in connivance with government will not relent on their move to steal land from the already poor Ugandans whom the current government wants to make poorer. Besigye says land grabbing in Kayunga district is at the highest peak though other areas like Acholi, Teso, Bukedi, Lango, Buganda and Bunyoro have of late started experiencing high levels of land theft.

Former FDC President Besigye Kizza has today been besieged at his home by police preventing him to move to parliament where he was meant to present views on electoral reforms. He said the acts by police are unlawful.

Speaking to him from his home today, Besigye blames police for being a political actor for the current regime preventing the citizens from attaining full democracy mentioning last week’s prevention to hold a rally at Nsambya where he ended in prison the whole day.
Besigye adds that president Museveni is excessively using his powers to drive the 2016 polls to his side and letting down the nationally desired reforms by police hence creating inequalities in the coming polls. He vowed to continue protesting the leadership of the current regime until complete democracy is attained in Uganda.
Besigye’s home was fully surrounded by police officers and other security officers in casual wear.
