The residents and voters in Bukoto South in Lwengo district in greater Masaka have started living in fear due to increasing police arrests. The MP elect for Bukoto South, Mathias Nsubuga told us that most of the people who have been arrested are members of the opposition Democratic Party.

Nsubuga says that his supporters in Lwengo are being arrested and harassed by Uganda Police for celebrating his election victory in the MP by-election.

Hon Nsubuga beat the NRM candidate in the race, Alintuma Nsambu by 53.1% despite the fact that President Museveni and the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura campaigned and reportedly funded his campaigns.

Nsubuga, however, has advised the people and residents of Lwengo to be vigilant to avoid Police arrests and brutality when celebrating his election victory.

Although the people of Bukoto South in Lwengo district (greater Masaka district) have been peaceful throughout the parliamentary by elections in their area, two battalions have camped there for Thursday’s elections.

Each battalion comprises of 1,000 soldiers so the president has reportedly sent 5,000 soldiers to camp in Lwengo for the by elections. The Inspector General of Police Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura and his troops and Major Roland Kakooza Mutale of the infamous ‘Kalangala Action Plan’ are also camped in Lwengo reportedly to forge chances for the victory of NRM’s candidate in the race, Alintuma Nsambu. The real meat of the race is between DP’s Mathias Nsubuga and Alintuma Nsambu.

Kale Kayihura and President Museveni both finalized their campaigns for NRM Candidate Alintuma Nsambu on Tuesday. But many voters in Lwengo have been overheard as saying that ‘they will not be intimidated by Kayihura, Aronda Nyakairima and their heavy military deployment. But they will go ahead and vote for the candidates of their choice and safeguard their votes.’ The seat fell vacant after the high court nullified the election victory of Hajji Muyanja Mbabali.

As the parliamentary by elections in Bukoto South in Lwengo district in greater Masaka district have drawn nearer, the supporters of FDC, DP and NRM took to the roads and entered villages on Tuesday in preparation to cast their votes on July 12th.

The youth in hundreds jumped onto trucks, shouting in support of their respective candidates. The NRM candidate is Alintuma Nsambu, the DP candidate is the party’s Secretary General, Mathias Nsubuga and the FDC candidate in the race is little known Julius Sentamu.

Boda boda cyclists joined the DP, FDC and the NRM youth in sounding alarms and hooting as they made processions.

But the police arrested a number of DP youth for singing anti president Museveni songs. The seat fell vacant after Muyanja Mbabaali was thrown out of Parliament by the court over lack of enough academic qualifications.

The Inspector General of Police Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura has moved to Bukoto South Constituency in Lwengo district in greater Masaka to restore peace and order in the by-election campaigns that have turned violent.

Kayihura, was seen clad on a Uganda police attire and inside Kayihura was reportedly dressed a yellow T. Shirt, the colour for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party.

The people who saw Kayihura dressed a yellow T. Shirt inside a police uniform started alleging that he was in the area to campaign for the NRM candidate in the rank, Alintuma Nsambu. But it was not established whether the T. Shirt had the log of the ruling party.

Kayihura told the people of Kinoni in Lwengo district that “I will camp in Lwengo until end of by-elections.” President Museveni is expected to join his counterpart Kayihura at the end of this week to campaign for Nsambu. The tough contestants in the race are DP’s Mathias Nsubuga and NRM’s Alintuma Nsambu. But the real beef shifted from Nsambu and Nsubuga to Museveni vs the Kabaka of Buganda. Nsambu is looked at as Museveni’s blue eyed boy and DP’s Nsubuga as as the Kabaka of Buganda’s most beloved son in the area. At most of the villages and towns in Bukoto south the voters there have been overheard as saying that Nsambu is rejected for having despised the Kababa of Buganda. The seat fell vacant after the court nullified the election victory of hajji Mbabali.
