President Yoweri Museveni has described fallen former Kenyan head of state Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi as an icon who supported the East African Community and its integration.

Museveni on one of the visits to late Moi at his home in Kenya

“I learnt with sadness about the death of Mzee Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, the former president of Kenya. Him, Mzee Hassan Mwinyi and I revived what had become the defunct EAC”, Museveni said in a statement.

Museveni said that it was no doubt that Kenya, East Africa and the entire continent has lost a great leader.

The President said he first met Mzee Moi in 1979 after the defeat of Amin.

He said he later, when we waged the Liberation Struggle, he was critical and we kept him abreast of our struggle. He actually worked as a mediator in the 1985 Peace Talks.

Museveni said Moi was a true Pan-Africanist, who worked closely with the masses. He was also a deeply religious person.

“My condolences and that of Ugandans to His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, the Moi family and all Kenyans on the passing of this icon,” he said.

Over $10m( UGsh40b) investment sum is estimated to be spent on capital and 400 jobs created.

The first production of LifeMobile smart phones will be launched by President Yoweri Museveni early next year as Ms Anite  stated.

According to the CTI Africa chief executive officer, Mr Michael Landau, the initiative is aimed at developing specialised applications to improve healthcare, mobile banking, insurance, microfinance and education services.

Mr Landau confirmed that his team has already partnered with Jubilee Insurance for insurance services, Jumia Uganda for e-commerce, Ecobank and Microfinance Support Centre for e-banking, Medical Concierge and Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau for healthcare services.

“Our applications will be very important in improving people’s lives. We want LifeMobile to be a lifeline to all the digital services available. This LifeMobile is about using a smart phone as a tool for life as it will have Apps for healthcare, insurance, e-commerce and banking,” Mr Landau said.

“Through the Buy Uganda, Build Uganda policy, we shall put tax barriers for importation of products similar to those produced locally. We have already done that for ceramic tiles and therefore Ugandans need to be patriotic by buying what is manufactured here,” Ms Anite stated.

The discussions centered at how the firms can scoop some deals for contractor, supplier or operator businesses.
“As we (UK) prepare to leave the European Union, we have no choice but to be bold, enterprising, forward-looking and outward-reaching. The oil and gas sectors offer some of the most exciting possibilities for the UK, and my job is to connect British businesses to those possibilities.” He added.

The archbishop of Kampala archdiocese,Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has proposed that the tithe should be directly imposed on people’s monthly salaries.

During a mass at Rubaga cathedral, the archbishop condemned Christians’ actions of dodging the tithe yet its an obligation and not an option.

Dr. Kizito is ready to table the proposal before president Yoweri Museveni if supported by the catholics.

“Give me your support as I front this proposal because it is good for us. Aren’t you tired of putting money in a basket all the time?” he posed

He added that most of the believers who pay the tithe do not follow proper biblical guidelines of deducting 10% of their total earnings but only throw a few coins in the basket.

“Whenever we ask for tithe, everyone gives what they have at that time. But the Bible says a tenth of whatever you earn belongs to the church,” Archbishop Cyprian said

The directive also provides for the dismissal of the Contracts Committee of the ministry of Education due to “mishandling of the process for procuring furniture for selected primary schools in Uganda under the Ministry of Education and Sports”.

Those fired included Mr Daniel Nkaada, the ministry’s commissioner for basic education and ordered to refund Shs10,080,000, Mr Philly Mpaata, a quantity surveyor with Uganda Teacher and School Effectiveness Project (UTSEP).

Others are, Mr William Hasoho, a procurement specialist at UTSEP, and Mr Thaddeus Lugolobi, who the IGG ordered to refund Shs8.2m last year over the mismanagement of an emergency construction programme.

In the October 1 letter, Mr Museveni points out “persistent lack of seriousness by elements in the public service”, which he says is a major hindrance to efforts to empower Ugandans.

“Last month, I chaired two meetings in which I expressed my displeasure at the manner in which the above [furniture] procurement was handled by officials in the Ministry of Education and Sports. I told you and the ministers of State that the award of all the tenders under the said procurement to foreign firms upon eliminating our local enterprises from the process was a blatant violation of the government’s own “Buy Ugandan Build Uganda” policy and, therefore, unacceptable,” Museveni letter read.

The source of the nile bridge was funded by both the government of Uganda and the Japan International Cooperation Agency with 20% and 80% respectively.

The president added that Uganda has received aid of about $ 1.2billion from Japan. In return, Uganda continues to support Japan by importing its cars, iron products and machinery.

The president was amazed by the participation of Ugandans in providing labour towards the construction of the bridge.

He also said this is one of the projects and among others incoming are the Entebbe Expressway and hydro power plants.

I was told that 90% of the 760 contractors’ staff, craftsmen and labourers were Ugandan,” he said.

“This is a season of big projects. This is just one of them. As you heard I recently commissioned the Entebbe Expressway; the following year I will be commissioning a number of hydro power plants, “he added.

However, no bodaboda motorcycles and bicycles will be allowed to use the bridge.
