Late Sam Owori

Rotary International is to establish a polio fund in memory of the late President-Elect Sam Frobisher Owori who died unexpectedly on 13th July in Dallas U.S.A due to complications from surgery.

Addressing the press at Grand Imperial hotel regarding the burial arrangements for Owori, the past District Governor of Rotary Uganda and Tanzania, Stephen Mwanje said the fund is a form of appreciation for Sam whose leadership saw the number of Rotary clubs grow from 9 to 89 in 29 years.

Mwanje says the fund is a sign of Rotary’s commitment to the eradication of Polio in the world as well as a celebration of Owori’s incredible passion to make a difference in the lives of others especially the less privileged.

Owori’s body arrives in the country from the United States of America on Monday and his body will on July 26, be taken to Parliament for a special sitting in his honour.

Uganda National action for people with disabilities (UNADP) has partnered with the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) and organized a camp where people with cleft lip and or palate received free surgery.

The camp, where 22 were people operated on and treated, took place at Kampala International University (KIU) Hospital in Ishaka,  Bushenyi district. The role of UNAPD was to identify and mobilize patients to come for surgery while AMREF paid for the surgery and supplies. Other organizations involved were

TAICONET and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).  Patients came from many districts of Uganda including Hoima, Soroti, Kisoro, Ntungamo, Kabale, Mbarara, Ssembabule, Kalungu, Kalangala, and Bushenyi, among others.

A team of doctors from Kenya led by Dr Nguti from Kenya’s capital city Nairobi joined their counterparts from KIU hospital and one from from Mulago Hospital and performed the surgery.

The patients looked all smiles after successful recovery from the theatre.

“I think now I am no longer disabled. People in my village will be astonished. They may fear me thinking that I am not the one, or I am a ghost,” said a 54-year-old-man from Ssembabule district after recovering from the surgery. He had lived with a cleft lip for all his life.

“My son will now be able to suckle the breasts. He is going to look more beautiful. People are going to stop laughing at me and my son,” said Moureen Nabweteme, a mother of a patient.

Cleft lip is a condition where a child is born with an opening or gap in the upper lip, often connecting to the nostril. For the cleft palate, the child is born with an opening in the roof of the mouth connecting with the canal of the nose. Children with cleft lip can hardly suckle breast milk while children with the palate cannot suckle at all and are just bottle fed. However, with surgery, both of these conditions can be corrected. Researchers attribute the causes of cleft lip/palate to poor nutrition during early pregnancy and wrong use of medicines, pesticides, chemicals (even rat poisons) especially during the first three months of pregnancy. The causes of these conditions can also be genetical (hereditary). For example, a parent with a cleft lip can produce a child or have grandchildren with a similar condition. Cleft lip patients receive free surgery.

An operation is needed for barren women so that they can become pregnant. It is certain that a woman can be pregnant even after such an operation.

The removal of fibroids enhances the chances of a woman getting pregnant, especially when there is no other problem causing the infertility.

This so if a woman is in her fertile early 20s, and she has no complications like infections or bad scars that may involve the fallopian tubes following surgery.

The doctors say that it is useful to remove fibroids after doing tests to see whether the fallopian tubes are patent (clear) since blocked tubes are a common cause of infertility in Uganda and in East Africa.

On several occasions the removal of a certain type of fibroids found near the inside of the womb (sub mucosal fibroid) have a successful outcome with many getting pregnant but not other types of fibroids. For how long a woman should wait before trying to get pregnant after surgery depends on the number, size and location of fibroids.

However it is advisable that a woman gets pregnant within three to six months after the operation is done because waiting too long might not help much as the fibroids might grow again.

James Kafeero, an oncologist at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago Hospital (Uganda) says that risk factors that lead people to contract leukemia are as follows. Having relatives or being in company of people who have or have had leukemia, people with underlying genetic disorders such as downs’ syndrome, previous exposure to ionizing radiations like X-rays and an atomic/nuclear reaction exposure expose one to leukemia.

Kafeero says that other risk factors that may lead to leukemia are previous exposure to chemotherapy regimens, insecticides and herbicides containing benzene compounds.

He says that the control strategy of leukemia is early diagnosis and treatment because most leukemia cases are curable. The treatment of leukemia varies from supportive treatment to chemotherapy and surgery according to Dr. Kafeero. But the best treatment recommended is supportive treatment, for instance blood transfusion, good nutrition and treatment of infections.

Leukemia drugs are given (chemotherapy) to patients with leukemia in different phases in order to prevent recurrence of the disease. The treatment of leukemia lasts for about three months. When it comes to surgery, it involves doing a bone marrow transplant. The treatment of leukemia is quiet expensive.

Dryness makes women fail to lubricate during sex intercourse. The women who have this problem many times find sex boring and less pleasant.

Dryness is the main cause of pain during sex and the female private parts may feel itchy. Dr. Samuel Matovu of Ndejje health IV says that dryness is sometimes a symptom of virginal illness, irritation, and wounds inside the woman’s parts. He says that the woman’s private parts may become dry when she is tired, bored, on tension, and when she is over stressed.

Stress among other issues raised makes women private parts thinner and less elastic. Dr. Matovu also says that the use of contraceptives also weaken the cells that are responsible for producing fluids in the woman’s private parts. Genital damage that could be caused by childbirth is another reason that sometimes causes dryness. Dr. Matovu says that other factors that cause dryness could be candida, virginal surgery, diabetes dehydration and gastric ulcers. Watch this space for solutions soon.
