Winnie Kiiza officially hands over office to new Leader of Opposition

Former opposition leader and Kasese Woman Member of Parliament, Winnie Kiiza has officially handed over the office of the Leader of Opposition to Betty Aol Ochan, the new Opposition Leader.

“It was a humbling experience and I am very grateful. It has given me wide exposure and an opportunity I know will take my career ahead,” Kiiza said before officially handing over.

Kiiza commended FDC party for giving her a platform and opportunity towards leadership as the first women leader of opposition.

Upon receiving the office files,Aol pledged to work hand in hand with her predecessor for the betterment of the opposition.
“Let your day continue to be open to us,” she urged Kiiza.

“The first thing I thought was ‘where are we going to deploy her? Where is her office going to be?’ Those are questions I kept on asking,” Aol remarked.

although there are a lot of differences in the opposition, Kiiza believes that they can be ‘sorted out and we find one front’.

NRM welcomes new Leader of Opposition, pledges to give her necessary support

The ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has welcomed the newly appointed Leader of Opposition and pledged to give her all the support necessary.

NRM Chief Whip in Parliament, Ruth Nankabirwa congratulated Gulu Municipality MP, Betty Ochan upon the appointment adding that the NRM was “happy with her appointment and will work with her to take the country forward.

“We shall give you full support in the conduct of your office because Uganda is for us all and we need to work together,” she said.

Ochan officially took office yesterday, August 8 replacing Kasese Woman MP, Winnie Kiiza who has served in the capacity since 2016.

The now former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Winnie Kiiza has finally succumbed and resigned her seat! The Kasese Woman MP has penned resignation from the seat and also praised ex-FDC president Mugisha Muntu for appointing her for the much-sought after position in opposition politics!

As I leave this office, I would like to congratulate my sister and colleague, Hon. Betty Aol upon her appointment as the New Leader. Allow me to thank the FDC party under the leadership of, Gen. (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha MUNTU for the opportunity they gave me to serve my country. It is one I will never regret. It is some opportunity that saw us move strides together for a common and a better tomorrow. I would like in a special way to thank my colleagues from all opposition parties in the 10th Parliament. Equally, those in the NRM who stood with me and supported the voice of reason when the situation demanded.To the change seeking Ugandans that supported all our efforts, its my humble prayer that you be rewarded. To the entire country my assurance is that we are stronger and determined to push for a change that will yield. A change that will not turn out to be a curse to the nation, a change for humanity and one that will cater for the dignity of all. Once again I would like to thank my social media team, the media fraternity, our fans and supporters whose views, opinions and advice moved us this far. Your support was genuine and I pray that we continue on this path and with all, Ugandans will one day smile as a team not as cliques. As I take leave, am proud that we moved as a team hence the vivid strides that speak for themselves. We have what to show to the country and I would encourage whoever has taken responsibility to emulate and soldier on. I would like to thank my lovely husband Mr. Bwambale Bihande Yokasi and my entire family for the support all through this journey of service. I spend a lot of time away from you for the sake of this great nation. You never complained because you believed in what I was doing. It was not all in vain.

Lastly but most importantly, allow me to thank the Almighty God. It was by his Grace that we came this far and I know He will continue guiding us and the entire nation.

New FDC reshuffles unconstitutional – Winnie Kiiza

Former leader of opposition, Winnie Kiiza, has criticized the previous reshuffles made by the FDC president, Patrick Oboi Amuriat saying that they are unconstitutional.Addressing journalists at Parliament on Monday,Kiiza cautioned her party leadership over making such legal decisions outside the constitutional terms and conditions.

She added that appointing “minority leaders would be foolish since there is no such position in the Constitution and the Parliamentary rules of procedure.”

“When we begin to break the rules of the game, abrogating the constitution even before we get into power, then there is a lot to be desired,” she said.

Kiiza warned FDC against repeating similar mistake like in 2016 the appointed leader of minority was rejected by parliament until the then Party president Maj Gen (rtd) Mugisha Muntu authored another letter appointing leaders of opposition in Parliament.

Although she claims she is not against the changes, and that its normal and healthy to change, former leader asserts that she is concerned about the manner in which the changes were being rushed especially when the current tenure of office is expected to elapse in December.

“As of now I wouldn’t want to go into the details of what we want to do, what we intended to do, because am equally speculating like other Ugandans; am only hearing about changes. I am not yet informed about them and I cannot therefore substantively comment about these changes,” she said.

Amuriat, on friday, replaced Ms Kiiza with Gulu Woman MP, Betty Aol Ochan while former was out of the country where she had led a group of MPs for a trip to California.

According to Sources at Najjanankumbi, Ms Winnie Kiiza had been dropped because of her persistent failure to attend meetings at the party headquarters.

LoP Winnie Kiiza opposes amendment of constitution

The leader of opposition in parliament Winnie Kiiza has opposed the amendment of the constitution to allow the lifting of the age limit in the constitution.

Kiiza accompanied by some opposition MPs was appearing before the committee on legal and parliamentary affairs chaired by Gomba West Mp Robinah Rwakoojo.

Kiiza informed the committee that the constitution should not be amended to fit the interests of a person or party as it is being done as they (amendments) are meant to benefit society.

Kiiza also said that in Africa countries have a tendency of amending the constitution to fit the interests of the current regimes and urged the country to emulate countries like Burkina Faso and Ivory coast whose constitution have been tested.

Kiiza also stated that Uganda has capable well educated citizens who can run and hence there is no reason to amend article 102B without prior testing.

Opposition launches campaign against constitutional amendment of Article 26

Opposition Members in Parliament this weekend launched a countrywide campaign against the proposed constitutional amendment of Article 26 starting with Masaka district.

The amendment intends to give government the mandate to compulsory acquisition of private land for government development purposes.

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament and also Kasese District Woman MP, Winnie Kiiza, says that the opposition members need to consult the general public about the proposed amendment.

Considering the legislative role for Members of Parliament, Kiiza says that the Opposition does not expect the police to stop them went they go out to the 21 sub regions of Uganda consulting the people on the law that pertains their rights on land.

Kiiza says that it would illegal for the police to block any member of parliament from consulting Ugandans on a bill that is before Parliament.

According to the program, the opposition MPs will move to Kampala District, Katwe, Nakulabye, Kasokoso in particular before going the Wakiso district.

She told reporters at the Parliament that through this campaign the public will be sensitized on demerits of the proposed amendments urging that the bill was brought in bad faith and it is not in interests of Ugandans.

Flanked by members of the shadow cabinet, Kiiza says that the only resource Ugandans are left with is land and they cannot allow President Museveni and his colleagues to deprive them of this only resource.

Makindye West MP, Allan Sewanyana

Makindye West MP, Allan Sewanyana, told this Newspaper that the argument of compulsory acquisition of land for purposes of government development project does not hold water since government can still get land for development after full compensation of land owners.

Ssewanyana adds there precedents where government has acquired land displaced people in the name of development but to-date the land is idle. He says in some cases such land acquired by government is instead development by private individuals under the guise of investors.

Meanwhile, Kiiza also points out that this bill could be used to fight and cripple political opponents, by government forcefully taking their property under the guise of putting up development projects and giving inadequate compensation to the victim.

On the ongoing debate of lifting the presidential Age limit, Kiiza says that the opposition will tackle the matter at the appropriate time.

THE Leader of Opposition in Parliament,Winnie Kiiza, has stressed the need for the opposition work in harmony with government programs that will benefit the local person.

Kiiza while addressing members from civil society organizations who had come to visit her noted that most of the time the people have this perception that the opposition is there to oppose government programs which she says is not true.

She also says that as the alternative government their job is to advise government on its programs to ensure they are well implemented.

Kiiza also tasked civil society organisations to advise the opposition on the things they would like them to tackle more.

This prompted the leader of the delegation, Lydia Kobusingye, the program director,Civil Society Budget Advocacy Group (CSBAG) who asked MPs for speedy review of reports by accountability agencies.

Winnie Kiiza: President Museveni’s government plots to rig Kasese elections

Uganda’s leader of opposition, Ms Winnie Kiiza (FDC) claims that president Museveni’s government is plotting to rig Kasese district woman MP by elections.

She says FDC is aware of the propensity to rig Kasese woman MP, intimidate, harrass, maim, and bribe voters.

But Ms Kiiza says that considering the high mobilization the opposition in kasese Woman MP race is doing, president Museveni’s plots to rig elections shall be overcome.

Addressing the press in Kasese town council today, Ms Kiiza said all the NRM’s hiccups won’t circumvent the people’s power through their undying zeal for change.

Ms Kiiza says FDC is determined to trounce NRM in Kasese district woman MP race. There are four candidates in the race. They are Winnie Kiiza, Betty Kayenzu, Rosemary Masiko (DP) and Rehema Muhindo (NRM).

Kasese woman MP seat became vacant after the high court nullified the election of Winnie Kiiza over election irregularities.
