Kiira Motors Corporation is to employ over 14, 000 people when it starts locally assembling vehicles. The firm has already started training some of its staff for competence certification as they prepare to begin production in 2020.

Eight technical employees have been undergoing metal welding and fabrication training at Lugogo Vocational Institute for three weeks and were yesterday presented before the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) to assess their level of skills.

The Kiira Motors business development manager, Mr Allan Muhumuza, yesterday confirmed that they have started connecting water pipelines, electricity and making access roads at the assembly plant to pave way for construction, slated to be complete in December 2019.

“We are training our staff so that when production starts, we already have all the necessary skills to boost the business. There will be 2,000 direct employment and 12,000 indirect job creation. The vehicles will be locally made and customised for the users’ needs,” Mr Muhumuza said.

He added that Kiira motor will produce 5,000 vehicles annually at a competitive rate.

Over $40m (about Shs149 billion) was approved by cabinet to support the construction of the plant on a 100-acre piece of land in Jinja Industrial Park, in Kagogwa Village.

Half of the land will be used as testing ground for the vehicles while 50 acres will host the plant.

Dr Michael Okumu, the DIT deputy director assessment and certification department, advised employers to closely assess workers before recruitment.

“The problem with Ugandans is that we want as many degrees as possible. But how much can an individual offer in the world of work? If there is a job and you ask the candidate what skills they have, you hear them saying they can speak or debate. But employers are looking, for example, if you are a driver, if you can repair a car in case there is a breakdown,” Mr Okumu said.

Are you interested in a research career and in working at the frontiers of biogeochemical processes? Then here is an opportunity to do a PhD in an internationally recognized research environment supported by national and international cooperation partners.

  • Wider context of the project
The overall aim of the PhD fellowship is to close the gaps in our knowledge on the anaerobic degradation pathways of nitrogen compounds in anoxic groundwater systems.
  • Scientific focus of the announced PhD position
Elevated inorganic nitrate concentrations in aquatic environments can cause significant impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Nitrate concentrations in groundwater have increased over the past decades due to increased agricultural activity that is directly linked to food production. In addition many other sources such as municipal wastewater can also contribute to nitrate contamination in groundwater and surface water. To assess the chemical history of nitrogen-compounds in groundwater, stable isotope technique has proven to be a powerful tool in environmental science. The research questions will primarily be investigated using microcosm experiments linked to field investigations. The project will analyze the dominant sources and sinks of nitrogen in groundwater and their degradation pathways using stable isotope technique.
  • Qualifications
At the date of appointment candidates must hold an MSc degree in natural science (e.g. bio/geochemistry, microbiology, hydrology), preferably with a strong background in biogeochemistry in hydrogeological or marine systems. The Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, which is part of The Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a motivated Researcher for a Post-doctoral position. The position is within a new research project aiming at developing techniques for high-throughput, low-temperature testing of metal alloy samples that may exhibit superconductivity or magnetic transitions.

The position is part of a new EC-funded project “Accelerated Metallurgy”, which is based on a new technology allowing high speed production of ternary metallic alloys. About 20 partners are going to test these alloys for various properties. Among those, Risø DTU is expected to take care of the detection of superconducting and magnetic transitions.

Job description
The work will encompass various aspects including design, building and testing of setups for high-throughput testing; selection of ternary phase diagrams of interest based on literature survey; systematic composition-properties studies in selected systems. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the supervision of the activities of students involved in the project.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Science or Civil Engineering within physics or materials science or equivalent
  • Documented experience required in physical characterization of superconducting and/or low-temperature magnetic transitions
  • Previous experience with design of equipment for physical properties measurements is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and to be a part of a dynamical group
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

We offer

  • An exciting and challenging education in an international environment
  • Good possibilities for professional and personal growth
  • A family friendly organization with flexible working hours.

Terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

Most of the project will be performed at the Materials Research Division at the Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy unit of DTU, situated close to Roskilde. The starting date will be 1 July 2011 or later upon agreement. The position is for a duration of 2 years.

Application
We must have your online application by 15 February 2011. Please open the link “apply online” and fill in the application form and attach your application, CV and a list of publications. Applications should be submitted in English.

Applications and enclosures received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.

Candidates should have expertise in at least one family of nanoscale characterization techniques

Study Subject: Physics or Material Sciences
Employer: the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology
Level: Postdoctoral
Scholarship Description: The position is open in the context of the new European FP7 project “Large area molecularly assembled Nanopatterns for Devices (LAMAND) which investigates the use of block copolymer self-assembly and the concept of molecular machining to realize a scaleable, manufacturable process for nanopatterning substrate surfaces at dimensions consistent with industry roadmap goals for new nanoelectronic device technologies. Emphasis will be given in the development of new technologies, based on nanoimprint lithography (NIL), and novel intelligent and functionalised resist materials. Two key responsibilities are at the base of this postdoctoral position: (i) the design and fabrication of structures to deliver to project partners using electron beam lithography, thermal and UV assisted NIL and (ii) to characterise the fabricated nanostructures using SEM and AFM imaging techniques. Experience in nanofabrication and
characterization of resist materials is essential.

The applicant should have (a) a PhD in physics or material sciences or electrical engineering, (b) expertise in nanofabrication processes, (c) clean room experience and (d) expertise in at least one family of nanoscale characterisation techniques, eg., structural, physical, optical, thermal. Other areas of expertise which are welcome include: nanoimprint lithography, step and flash imprint lithography, polymer functionalisation and nanometrology approaches. Excellent communications skills and readiness to travel to project meetings are crucial.
Scholarship Application Deadline: 31/12/2010
