Lewis Hamilton claimed his fifth world championship title after finishing fourth in the Mexican Grand Prix to establish himself among the Formula One greats.

Red Bull‘s Max Verstappen was victorious in the race, finishing ahead of Sebastian Vettel who finished second and Kimi Raikkonnen who was third on the podium.

Hamilton

The Brit poses in front of a pitboard in the pitlane that marks his championship success with a ‘HiFive’ hashtag

But in the end that mattered little for Hamilton, who now can’t be caught in the drivers’ standings with two more races left in the season.

Ever since joining the McLaren as an intelligently talented 13 year old, Hamilton’s stock has only gone up as he achieved the rare feat of meeting expectations with results.

His supreme talent has guided him to four world championships in the past five years to go alongside the one he won in just his second ever season, all the while breaking the mould from what many still consider to be a privileged, white man’s sport to sit on the cusp of becoming the sport’s greatest-ever champion.

After all, 33-year-old Hamilton is just the first black driver to race in Formula One, let alone win world championships.

Hamilton struggled to the end despite feeling vibrations in his car, fretting over his tyres in exasperated radio exchanges, and haemorrhaging time as his rubber gave him a mighty migraine.

Formula One multiple champions

The Briton now sits joint second on the overall list of Formula One world champions, level with Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio but still two behind Michael Schumacher whose seat at Mercedes Hamilton moved into when the seven-time champion retired for the second time in 2012.

Sebastian Vettel says he is not going to quit Ferrari following his 2018 Formula One title campaign turn into nightmares.

At the beginning of this year’s Formula One campaign, the German looked set to use his superior red car to scratch back ground against Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel

Sebastian Vettel’s season struggles continued in Suzuka as an error-strewn performance saw him finish well adrift

But in Monza (Italy), Singapore, Russia and now Japan, not only did Ferrari’s mistakes reign, but the Maranello team’s formerly superior 2018 car dropped steadily behind.

“I will not leave Ferrari.” Vettel said after the race before leaving Suzuka. “I’m part of the team and I want that to be the case and nothing else,” he said

“I think we have a lot of potential. Of course, the last races did not go well for us and we made it too easy for Mercedes. But even so the spirit within the team is good.”

However, Vettel recognizes that the championship is now looking mathematically impossible as Hamilton is likely to grab the title in the United States Grand Prix.

“Of course we know that it is difficult now. But what else do we have to lose?

“We will give everything and there are still important things we can learn and understand about the car,” he said.

Lewis Hamilton is on the edge of winning his fifth Formula One title following his victory in the Japanese Grand Prix yesterday. The Briton was dominant as title rival Sebastian Vettel ran into trouble attempting to gain ground from eighth place on the grid.

Sebastian Vettel’s gamble however exploded in his face when he crashed into Red Bull‘s Max Verstappen and almost handed the world title to the Mercedes driver. The result means Ferrari‘s Vettel is 67 points behind Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton is now in a position to win his fifth world championship with victory at the United States Grand Prix next time out

Lewis Hamilton will win the world championship if he wins the United States Grand Prix and Sebastian Vettel fails to finish second. Hamilton can also claim the title by outscoring Vettel by eight points in Austin.

It was a calming race at the front, Hamilton so in control on his way to his sixth win in seven races that he at one point asked his team if they were still there, so little did they need to talk to him.

It seems strange to think it now, but it is not that long since Hamilton and Mercedes looked like they were in a real dogfight for this title but it seems like the Briton is going to make it happen.

Lewis Hamilton took a giant step towards winning a fifth world championship with victory in the Russian Grand Prix.

Hamilton benefited from team orders as Mercedes told his team-mate Valtteri Bottas to let him pass-by at half distance to protect against rival Sebastian Vettel, something Hamilton is not happy with.

Bottas and Hamilton

Bottas was instructed by his team to allow title-chasing Hamilton to pass him at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi on Sunday

Bottas, who had captured a superb pole on Saturday and was searching for his first win of the season, was asked to cede the lead to Hamilton with less than half of the race completed as the Silver Arrows looked to inflict maximum damage on Vettel and Ferrari in the title race.

The Finn selflessly obliged, sacrificing personal glory for a result that not only ensured Mercedes retained their 100% record in Sochi, but allowed Hamilton to stretch his championship lead over Vettel, who came home third, to a massive 50 points.

But Hamilton had to overtake Vettel on track to get into a position to benefit from the orders after being passed at the pit stops.

The Briton is now 50 points ahead with 306 points a lead that means Vettel who finished third with 256 points no longer controls his own destiny as the four-time champion could win the remaining five races but still finish second in the standings.

Formula 1 may need to ‘standardise’ some elements of its hybrid engine regulations to maintain “confidence” in rule enforcement, reckons Renault team boss Cyril Abiteboul. The 2018 F1 season has featured ongoing speculation about Ferrari’s hybrid system, which the FIA has passed as legal.

It continues to attract attention from rivals, and Renault Sport F1 managing director Abiteboul believes it is possible for manufacturers to find ways to get around the current rules. He thinks some elements of standardisation on power units could help the FIA to police the regulations.

Renault Sport F1 managing director Abiteboul believes it is possible for manufacturers to find ways to get around the current rules

“I don’t want to create a debate here, but I think we need to think how we can help the FIA, regarding the enforceability of the regulations,” Abiteboul told Autosport.

“I really believe that the complexity of the engine is such that I would not want to have myself to police it.

“So I think we need to figure that out.

“I really believe that some elements of standardisation are not just useful but absolutely necessary if we want to retain some confidence between all the participants.”

Abiteboul thinks some elements of standardisation on power units could help the FIA to police the regulations

Abiteboul says ideas are on the table that could help with policing, and that the opportunities to circumvent the rules at present are obvious.

“I think that, frankly, if we wanted to cheat on the current engine, we would know how to do it, and that’s an issue,” he said.

“We are a very large corporation and we would never do such a thing like that, we can’t afford the reputation risk.

“I’m not saying that anyone is cheating, but I think it’d be good to get rid of all the speculation, by doing some local and targeted standardisation, and we’ve put forward some proposals in relation to that.”

Lewis Hamilton took a sensational victory in a thrilling, rain-hit German Grand Prix as Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel crashed out to gift the Mercedes driver a 17-point lead in their championship battle.

Vettel had been cruising to victory ahead of Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas until rain started to fall with about 25 laps to go.

Lewis Hamilton started 14th on the grid at Hockenheim on Sunday but still managed to win a dramatic German Grand Prix

The downpour, affecting only part of the track, turned the race on its head and brought Hamilton into the mix when he had been looking at a fourth-place finish after starting 14th following a hydraulic failure in qualifying.

Hamilton began to shape into the advantage of the three leading drivers – Vettel, his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and Bottas – as chaos erupted down the field.

And then, as the rain became heavier, Vettel lost control at the Sachs Kurve hairpin in Hockenheim’s Stadium section in front of tens of thousands of his home fans, bringing out the safety car.

The four-time champion swore over the radio as he took in the potential damage to his title hopes.

Hamilton pulled away at the front following the safety car period, but only after Bottas was told to back off an initial challenge and hold position.

He was later summoned by race stewards at Hockenheim for a possible pit-lane infringement

Behind the Mercedes one-two, Raikkonen took third while Max Verstappen was fourth for Red Bull despite making two pit stops to change tyres in three laps amid the confusion caused by the rain.

It was a remarkable result in a remarkable race, which had started as a damage-limitation exercise and ended with Hamilton’s 66th career victory – and one of his best.

“Get in there, Lewis,” his engineer Peter Bonnington said as the chequered flag fell. “Miracles do happen.”

“Great job by you guys,” Hamilton said, but it had been far from smooth sailing for the world champion.

Hamilton’s win was later put in doubt after he was summoned to the stewards to explain a driving misdemeanor but he escaped with a reprimand.

Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain celebrates his victory in the Italian F1 Grand Prix in Monza.

Mercedes were investigated on the grounds the tyres were below the minimum permitted pressure.

However the stewards allowed Hamilton to keep his victory after ruling Mercedes had followed safe operating procedures.

Hamilton when faced with claims of below minimum start pressure recommended by Pirelli stated that it was not his job. “I don’t know what to say about it, it’s not my job,” said the Briton, He added; “Today I’ve been so happy with how the car has been in the race. “Formula One is about running to the bare minimum. For whatever reason today, 0.3psi – if that’s what it was – 0.3psi… It makes no difference to the car, particularly on one tyre. I’m sure Pirelli could prove it. That’s not the reason we won.”

Hamilton finished over 25 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, with Felipe Massa completing the podium for Williams.

Mercedes teammate and championship challenger Nico Rosberg was forced to retire when his engine blew with two laps to go as he challenged Vettel for second place.

The win means Hamilton now leads with a 53-points advantage in the drivers’ world championship with seven rounds of the 19-race championship remaining.

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel finished third for Ferrari, behind Rosberg, with Williams driver Felipe Massa missing out a place on the podium after leading for the first 20 laps following a blazing start.

Hamilton who previously won at Silverstone in 2008 and 2014 recorded his 38th career victory extending his lead to 17 points over team-mate Rosberg who had won three of the past four races.

The estimated 140,000 fans enjoyed what is regarded as the best race of the year so far with Hamilton becoming the third Briton, after Jim Clark and Nigel Mansell, to win three times at home

Hamilton acknowledged how Mercedes’ bad starts had “made the race for the fans” and, thanked the fans, he said:

“Thank you for coming out today and making my whole weekend, I really wanted to do it for you guys. I couldn’t have done it without you. I’m so elated. You can’t imagine how happy I am. I was tearing up on the last lap.”

Only 13 cars finished, with Sauber‘s Brazilian Felipe Nasr retiring before the start when his car was stuck in sixth gear on the track as he headed for the grid.

A virtual safety car also came into play on lap 34 when the Toro Rosso of Spaniard Carlos Sainz stopped on the runoff and had to be removed with a tractor.

Valtteri Bottas finished fifth, ahead of Red Bull’s Russian Daniil Kvyat, while Ferrari‘s Kimi Raikkonen was eighth and sandwiched between the Force Indias of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez in seventh and ninth.

Hamilton suffered a setback around the halfway stage with a five-second penalty after infringing a white lane on a pit exit.

The Briton had started in pole position but was slow off line giving Rosberg the chance to overtake him on the turn and stayed in command for his third race season win having won the Spanish and Monaco Grand prix.

Rosberg only scare came shortly during the single pit stops but he generally had full control of the race.

There were some worries towards the end with a serious front tyre vibration but the Germany was able to hold on and win the race.

The win means that the German has now got 11 career titles and he moved within 10 points of Hamilton in the standings.

The Mercedes motorsport chief, Toto Wolff, was asked how Rosberg manages to keep in touch with Hamilton, Wolff said: “I’ve been asked this before: ‘Is this the tipping point? Is he now going to be No2 [driver]?’ I kept repeating that he’s mentally very strong, and we’ve seen that today.

“Both of them are under pressure because they’re pushing each other so much. Nico was faultless. We saw from today it’s going to go down to the wire. The races we have seen have been characterised by tiny mistakes by both of them, or the team, and today we have seen great race pace and faultless execution by Nico. It was a great performance.”
