Panama promised passion and fighting spirit and we now know what they meant as two goals from Romelu Lukaku helped to settle a bruising and often frustrating encounter in Belgium‘s favour.

Lukaku struck twice after Dries Mertens cracked the deadlock with a wonderful dipping volley. Three splendid goals, all in the second half, but this was a tie littered with stoppages, insignificant fouls and eight yellow cards. Five were shown to Panama, the most for any one team in a World Cup game since Holland in the 2010 final.

Roberto Martinez feared for the safety of captain Eden Hazard who limped out of the Fisht Stadium in Sochi with a heavy strapping on his left calf.

The ball was sent flying across the face of goal and Jaime Penedo, the Panama goalkeeper, could do nothing to stop it

‘You could see the yellow cards were mounting,’ said Belgium manager Martinez. ‘It is a worry that in any of those tackles he could get hurt. ‘It’s one way of trying to stop him, and everyone is allowed to prepare games in the way you can. That’s part of the rules but you run the risk of players sent off.

Lukaku then got his name on the scoresheet, latching on to Kevin De Bruyne's ball with a fine diving header to double the lead

‘My worry is that we lose the opportunity to enjoy quality of a player like Eden. Not just for Eden. Any player with the ability to take players on. We hope we get lucky in that respect.’ Kevin de Bruyne’s patience snapped late on as he committed the worst tackle of the game, planting his studs into the midriff of substitute Luis Tejada and could have seen red rather than yellow.

Then just six minutes later, the Manchester United marksman found himself clean through before dinking over to make it 3-0

‘Sometimes we look tough,’ said Panama boss Hernan Gomez. ‘But I saw Belgium players going in very hard as well. We never have any intention to be tough. We try not to hurt anybody. We don’t have bad intentions.’

Gareth Southgate will take note. His Panama paper will be a very different sort of test. Belgium passed it, but they required clear minds before the quality won through. Five thousand Panama supporters made the journey to Russia to witness their World Cup debut, neutral support swung their way and the volume went up as they frustrated their illustrious opponents.

Belgium, with De Bruyne deployed deeper than for Manchester City was unable to drive the tempo higher in the first half. Martinez stopped short of complaining about the pitch but he mentioned the length of the grass for the second time in three days. He thinks it is too long and deterring slick passing.

Panama fell down injured with little encouragement, demanded treatment and took their time on restarts while disrupting the rhythm with a succession of free-kicks. Belgium, for their part, wasted chances and Roman Torres produced remarkable if slightly fortuitous clearance to stop Lukaku tapping in a cross from De Bruyne.

Panama grew in confidence as half-time approached but any momentum ground to a halt after the interval. Roman Torres and Fidel Escobar failed to clear a cross and when the ball dropped to Mertens on the right, the Napoli winger finally beat ‘keeper Jaime Penedo with a volley which looped inside the far post.

Manchester United were rocked on Wednesday night after Anthony Martial‘s representative revealed he wants to leave the club.

Months of negotiations over a new long-term contract at Old Trafford have reached an impasse, with Philippe Lamboley claiming Martial is unhappy at a lack of assurances over his role.

The 22-year-old, left out of France’s World Cup squad, has come in for criticism from Jose Mourinho over his workrate. Mourinho made it plain that Martial’s performances were inadequate following defeat at Brighton last month.

Martial’s contract runs out at the end of next season, although United have an option to extend that until 2020.

The winger started just four Premier League games after being linked with a January move to Arsenal. The Gunners eventually signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead.

Lamboley went on to claim Martial would see out his deal and leave on a free if Mourinho refused to sanction a move.

‘It is a well-considered decision. He is under contract, United will have the last word and we will respect the decision of the club, it will go to the end of its commitment,’ he added.

‘We do not have the same vision on Anthony’s future. Without the unconditional support of the fans, Anthony would have already asked to leave United.

‘I will not comment on the consequences of the January transfer window. Everyone will have his opinion, I think he must resume the course of his career. The time has come.’

Manchester United will look to recoup as much money as possible if they sell Anthony Martial

Martial has not been named in France’s World Cup squad meaning a deal can be concluded swiftly if both clubs can agree a fee.

Pochettino has identified the pacy forward as one of his priorities ahead of next season as he looks to build a squad capable of sustaining a title tilt.

The Argentine will be given at least £100million to spend on new talent this summer and is pre-pared to splash a significant percentage of that on Martial. United will look to recoup as much of the money they spent to bring the 22-year-old to Old Trafford in 2015 as possible.

Martial signed for an initial £38m, but the transfer was loaded with expensive add-ons which pushed the price up to a maximum of £58m. United’s determination to maximise income from any Martial sale will be the biggest stumbling block towards a deal, particularly given Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s reputation as a fierce negotiator.

Manchester United saw off West Ham United in style with comfortable 4-0 win in their opening game of the Premier League season at Old Traford on 13th, August, 2017.

Romelu Lukaku opened his account by scoring in the 33rd minute of the first half after brilliant link up play with Marcos Rashford.

The Belgian went ahead and doubled the lead for United in the 52nd minute after Mkhitaryan cut in a free kick from the edge of West Ham’s area.

Former Red Devils striker Javier Hernandez had a quite game with the United defence marshaled by Eric Bailly and Phil Jones proving too much for him to crack.

Manchester United dominated the game and were in cruise control when Marcos Rashford was denied a goal after his superb effort from 25 yards struck the inside of the post and the ball went out.

Anthony Martial who was introduced into the game in the 80th minute struck his first goal of the season and Paul Pogba sealed the game by scoring from his curling effort.

David de Gea in the United goal was barely tested in the whole game and Hammers manager Slaven Billick needs a lot of work to do.

More will tell if Manchester United will keep their good start to the season with is a trip to South Wales to the Liberty stadium to face Swansea City.

Tottenham Cruise past Newcastle

Tottenham made a winning start to the new Premier League season as they beat 10-men Newcastle 2-0 at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s good start to the match was damaged when their captain Jonjo Shelvey was sent off early into the second-half for stamping on Dele Alli.

Alli later went on to score in the 61st minute when he latched onto Christian Eriksen’s diagonal pass into the box.

Moments later, Spurs sealed the win when Ben Davis finished from close range in the 70th minute.

Museveni 2President Yoweri Museveni had only nice things to say about the Uganda Police Force affirming that it has the capacity to decisively deal with criminals since it is now composed of educated officers and has increasingly become professional.

“The Police Force we have today has the capacity to eliminate or minimize crime because you have educated people unlike the former force that was illiterate or semi-illiterate,” he said.

The President who is also the Commander in Chief of the Uganda Armed forces was yesterday speaking at the pass out ceremony of Police Officers and Constables who have been undergoing a 10 months training course at Police Training School in Kabalye – Masindi district. The officers comprised 788 Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police 218 of whom are female, 4,076 Probation Police Constables 708 of whom are female and 1000 Field Force Police Officers all from various universities.

He urged the new officers to be disciplined and committed while carrying out their duties saying these are crucial for our security and assured them of a bright future in their new career as the country is today peaceful and the economy is growing.

“Discipline and commitment by you graduands is very crucial.” He noted, “You have a bright future ahead of you. Our economy is growing and if you serve with commitment you will not regret. A good career is before you.”

He advised the graduands not to squander their youthful lives by indulging in bad habits like imbibing alcohol and promiscuity. He commended the leadership of Uganda Police Force and the Commanders of Police Training School Kabalye for the good training given to graduands.

The Minister of State for Internal Affairs James Baba who represented General Aronda Nyakairima noted that in a democratic environment prevailing in Uganda today there was need to increase the number of police to have their presence felt in every parish.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police Okoth Ochola urged graduates to be exemplary while executing their duties.
