Zimbabwe has seen protests in various cities on Monday following the more than double increase in the prices of petrol and diesel in the country.

Protesters began by burning tyres and boulders in the cities of Harare and Bulawayo showing their anger over President Mnangagwa.

Minibuses heading to Bulawayo were attacked by protestors by burning tyres and some schools got closed for fear of loss of lives.

Mugabe’s successor came to say that the increase in the price of diesel and petrol is aimed at removing gaps that came as a result of illegal trading and increase in use of fuel.

The country is also producing less than it’s importing from outside which has caused loss in the value of a dollar.

The increase in the price of diesel and petrol has led to the opposition and trade union call for a three day strike in the country.

However heavy riot police deployments are in the towns of Harare and Bulawayo to stop the protests.

The hike means petrol prices rose from $1.24 (£0.97) a litre to $3.31, with diesel up from $1.36 a litre to $3.11.

Minibuses heading to Bulawayo were attacked by protestors by burning tyres and some schools got closed for fear of loss of lives, AFP reports.

“We want Mnangagwa to know our displeasure in his failure,” an angry Mthandazo Moyo told AFP.

“[Former President] Mugabe was evil but he listened,” he added.

Nelson Chamisa who is the leading opposition figure in the country said the state is in a national crisis.

“We have a national crisis which is descending into a humanitarian crisis.”Chamisa hinted.

Mnangagwa came into power in November 2017 after long term serving president Robert Mugabe was forced to resign after massive demonstrations.

Zimbabwe President elect Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on masses to forget the election period and focus on pushing the country forward.

Mnangagwa’s speech came on after his violent election was challenged in court over alleged fraud that even delayed his nauguration.

The election  involved the army opening fire on protesters, allegations of vote-rigging and a crackdown on opposition activists.

Emmerson Mnangagwa worked for 40 years with former President Robert Mugabe who was forced to resign.

“It’s now time to put the election period behind us and embrace the future,” the president-elect said at a speech on the annual day honouring Zimbabwe’s independence heroes.

“The task facing us today is a great one,” he added.

“We should never be deterred by temporary setbacks and regrettable events we have encountered.”

Mnangagwa narrowly won the July 30 vote with 50.8% to Chamisa’s 44.3% after taking power last year when the military ousted Mugabe after 37 years in office.

Meanwhile the leading opposition candidate Nelson Chamisa said the “unsatisfactory, and in fact scandalous way” the election was carried out was a “betrayal of the heroes and heroines who made an independent Zimbabwe possible in 1980”.

He added that in their push for liberation they had fought for “one person, one vote”.

Mnangagwa, a former close ally of Mugabe, repeated his accusation that the opposition MDC party was responsible for violence at an anti-fraud protest when soldiers opened fire killing six people.

The MDC on Friday lodged a Constitutional Court appeal against the election result, forcing Mnangagwa’s inauguration, which had been due on Sunday, to be postponed.

Kampala Police have interrupted a vehicle and rescued two children from suspected kidnappers who had asked for three million Uganda shillings payoff from the parents. According to the children, suspects tricked them into moving with them to buy some cakes and later disappeared with them without the approval of the parents.

The father Hajji Musa Muliika yesterday 5th August 2018 at 8am reported to Bweyogerere Police Station a case of kidnap of his two children namely; Nakula Muliika Rahma and Muliika Diin Tajudiin from their home in Kigandazi Zone – Bweyogerere after failing to trace them.

The police trackers located the calls made by the suspects to Lugazi as they kept asking for the three million Uganda shillings payoff to discharge the children. On realising that police was closing down on them, the suspects drove the children back to Kireka and were seized in a vehicle Toyota Hiace registration number UBB 724M.

The children were found in good health and have been re-united with their parents.

The two suspects whose names have been withheld upon questioning claimed that they had no intention of harming the young girls but rather to get money in form of payment from the parents.

The OC. Bweyogerere ASP. Mike Mugabe said the suspects who are facing kidnap related charged have currently been transfered to Kira Division Police Station to help police with investigations before being arraigned in court and the vehicle suspected to have been used in commission of the crime has been impounded.

Police were forced to remove the opposition officials from the electoral commission stage following the delayed results.

Opposition parties rejected the results of the presidential and parliament elections as they were unable to verify the results, according to the Chairman of the opposition MDC Alliance party.

Zanu-PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa has beaten MDC leader Nelson Chamisa in the election, re-establishing the political control of the party previously led by Robert Mugabe.

Zimbabwe elections

At least six people have died after violence broke in the capital, Harare

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission stated that Mnangagwa won 50.8 percent of the presidential vote, with Chamisa winning 44.3 percent. Mnangagwa required more than 50 percent of the vote to secure an outright victory in the election. Mnangagwa won 2.46 million votes in comparison to Chamisa who won 2.15 million.

Morgen Komichi, MDC chairman, made an impromptu televised statement at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, where the election results were being announced.

He declared that the party could not verify the results before he was removed by police. Zimbabwe’s election has been marred by violence and at least six people have been killed following protests in the capital, Harare.

Police patrolled the streets on Wednesday, and three people were shot dead as soldiers struggled to control protestors. Another three individuals died of their injuries on Friday, according to the police.

Opposition officials rejected the results and raised concerns surrounding vote rigging

Security forces also launched a crackdown on opposition officials, raiding the headquarters of the MDC Alliance. MDC headquarters remained closed on Thursday, and party officials stated 16 MDC employees had been taken away by the police.

Chamisa previously declared victory in the election but raised concerns surrounding the fairness of the process. Writing on Twitter, he said: “Victory is ours! Long winding queues in most parts of Harare. “There seems to be a deliberate attempt to suppress and frustrate the urban vote.

“Good turn out but the people’s will being negated and undetermined due to these deliberate and unnecessary delays.”

He declared he had won the “popular vote”, and stated “no amount of results manipulation will alter your will”.

The politician took aim at Zimbabwe’s Electoral Commission, and accused them of reversing the “people’s presidential election victory” by rigging the vote following a delay to the announcement of the results.

Mnangagwa welcomed the results of the election, stating: “I am humbled to be elected President of the Second Republic of Zimbabwe.

“Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams.

“This is a new beginning. Let us join hands in peace, unity and love.”

He expressed his condolences to the individuals who had died in the violence which spread across the capital, and stated he intends to launch an independent investigation into the protests.

Maj. General Stephen Tumusiime Rwabantu, Deputy Commander of the Reserve Forces has warned those thinking of destabilizing the peace of Uganda, saying the army is ready to defend the peace of the country at any cost.

Rwabantu made the remarks this morning at UPDF Headquarters in Mbuya, at a ceremony held to decorate the 62 officers that were recently promoted to different ranks, by the Commander in Chief, President Yoweri Museveni.

While addressing the guests, Rwabantu revealed how he is ready to join his boss in the bush again, like was the case in 1981 if the peace and stability of Uganda is threatened.

He threatened: “People who are thinking that they may come up and destablise this country, they are night dreamers because we are still around and we shall protect the peace we brought no matter what it takes.”

Rwabantu went ahead warning that enemies of Uganda shouldn’t think of the bush war heroes as tired and old lot, saying they still have the ability to thwart any threats to the country.

“We are growing old, but we are still able. So if anybody wants to destablise this country, this peace didn’t come on a silver plate. We lost our people in the bush, some of us are casualties but here we are. So we are warning those who keep running around and they think they will destablise they should think twice,” Rwabantu said.

The Reserve Forces boss joins former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Edward Katumba Wamala who made the same threats in February 2018, when he vowed fight against those who wish to unseat President Museveni without using constitutional means.

Katumba who also doubles as State Minister for Works was quoted during the launch of the construction of the Lwanabatya-Nakibanga 18Km road on Bukasa Island, Kalangala District, saying although there have been several calls for Uganda to emulate Zimbabwe that saw Robert Mugabe’s 3 decade rule come to an end by the help of the nation’s army, with a number of opinion leaders calling on UPDF to overthrow President Museveni.

According to the report, Many Ugandans in most regions were fully opposed to the removal of age limit in the constitution.

A report released on Tuesday by the Uganda governance and monitoring platform in partnership with CCEDU that was conducted between the months of September and October revealed that most National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs’ position on the age limit amendment does not reflect the position of their respective constituencies an indication that they are not representing the views of the electorates.

The executive director of Great lakes Institute for strategic studies, Godber Tumushabe, says that the research  shows that out of 436 MPs expected to vote on the amendment of article 102b, 276 were in support of the bill, 116,was opposed while 38 were un decided.

The report further points out that most of these MPs are brought into power by state machinery hence the full support to all the bills that come before the house.

Tumushabe says, some constituents Buganda, Ankole, Bugishu and Tororo regions the amendment of the constitution and rest of the regions were fully opposed to removal of age limit in the constitution and hence wonder where MPs could have collected their views.

Emmerson Mnangagwa has been sworn in as president of Zimbabwe today becoming the country’s second leader since independence from white minority rule in 1980.

Mnangagwa took his oath of office in front of tens of thousands of jubilant Zimbabweans who had gathered at a stadium in Harare, after greeting the crowd with a raised fist.

People sung and danced in the stands and raised banners reading “Dawn of a new era” and “No to retribution,” even as human rights activists began to report worrying details of attacks on close allies of the former first lady, Grace Mugabe, and their families. Mnangagwa himself has warned against “vengeful retribution.”

Mnangagwa is a 75-year-old liberation war veteran and stalwart of the ruling Zanu-PF party. He was sacked as vice-president by Robert Mugabe two weeks ago, trigging a political crisis that culminated in Mugabe’s resignation on Tuesday.

Senior members of the ruling Zanu-PF party had wanted 93-year-old Mr Mugabe to attend the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa, the man who deposed him, in an attempt to portray a natural transfer of power rather than change at the top initiated by a military coup.

Who is Mnangagwa

He is widely known as “the Crocodile”, a liberation war nickname that may have stuck because it suited his reputation for ruthless cunning.

He was born on 15 September 1942 in east Zimbabwe, where relatives remember him as an “active and confident” boy,

He completed his “O” and “‘A” levels while in prison through correspondence where he spent 10 years following which he enrolled for a law degree. In 1972 he sat for his final LLB examinations with the University of London.

After independence he was a stalwart of the Zanu-PF party, which he now leads, and was one of Mugabe’s closest aides, cycling through roles including spymaster and security chief, and administering the well-stocked party coffers before being made vice-president.

He fell out of favour, and was ousted along with supporters from his “lacoste” faction, when his own presidential ambitions crossed those of Mugabe’s wife, Grace – but the split was very recent.

His political summary

  • 1988 – 2000 Mnangagwa was Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and Leader of the House.
  • 1995–1996 He was appointed Acting Minister of Finance for 15 months.
  • 1996 and was also Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs for a short period
  • 2000–2005 was Speaker of the House of Assembly
