The mayor of Jinja municipality, Majid Batambuze is calling on the Central Government to consider increasing the budgetary allocations for the tourism sector as this will facilitate faster growth for the sector. Mr. Batambuze now refers to Kenya which he says has for a long time been investing in its tourism sector which has now seen the country attract more tourists hence registering a boost in their nationals economy and its upon this that he urges the govt of Uganda to consider increasing the tourism budget to boost the sector.

Jinja Municpality Mayor, Majid Batambuze

He reveals that the facilities that support the growth of the tourism sector like, roads, hotels among others are not meeting the required standard hence affecting the growth of the tourism sector.

Jinja now bags between UGX.70 million in poor seasons to UGX.130 million in good seasons through tourism which money is used by the district to develop the fading tourism sites in the area.

But with this little money, the district cannot afford to fulfill its plans of setting up a five star hotel, constructing roads leading to the tourism sites and maintaining the existing sites.

However, the town clerk Francis Byabagambi notes that a number of initiatives are still in the pipeline to have Jinja’s tourism potential resurrected to have tourists spend more than a week in the area touring different sites.

Currently tourists can only spend a maximum of not more than a week in Jinja following limited tourism sites in the area. Jinja district has a number of tourism sites namely, the Bujagali falls, source of the Nile among others.

Speaker and tourismHE speaker of parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has urged ugandans to get interseted in visiting tourism sites in the country as  a way to promote domestic tourism. Kadaga said this while launching a charity run known as Twegaite Source of the Nile run Jinja which is aimed at attracting people to learn more about the source of the Nile and all the proceeds from the run will go to creating cancer awareness and promotion of education in the region.

Kadaga says that it is very disappointing to see in Uganda people do not get a chance to explore the different sites that the country is blessed with and she gave an example of a person who is born in Jinja but has never bothered to visit the source of the Nile citing that this trend can not boost tourism as there will be no basis to attract foreigners to visit our sites.

The government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo urged parliamnet to pass guidelines restricting schools from making  children take trips to outside countries citing schools ask parents to part with over 800,000 shillings to go and visit countries like Kenya yet they have never been to any tourist site in the country which he says must stop if our children are to learn their heritage and country.

The executive director of Uganda tourism board Stephen Asiimwe says that the board is going to put more money into sport tourism as they have realised sport attracts many people which helps people in the area to benefit.

Jinja leaders meeting with the Speaker

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has directed the Town Clerk of Jinja Municipality to carry out a valuation of the land around the source of the River Nile. The Speaker issued the directive while meeting politicians and a technical team from Jinja Municipality on the delayed re-development of the area around the source of the Nile. Kadaga said that the Source of the Nile was gazetted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and there is need to have it developed into a better tourism site.
“We need to chart a way forward for Busoga tourism and one way is to develop that area so that it attracts more tourists,” she said.
Kadaga revealed that she had asked the Catholic Church to let the Pope visit the Source of the Nile but it was not up to the standard needed. “I spoke to the Catholic Church to let the Pope lead mass there but we don’t have the necessary facilities and so I was left in the dark,” she revealed.
Jinja Municipality West MP, Hon. Moses Balyeku, said that part of the land was allocated to developers who have since failed to do any work. He called on the technical team in the Municipality to carry out a valuation of the land.
“There is need to compensate people who have settled on the land around the Nile but this is only possible after a Government Valuer has surveyed and valued the land,” Balyeku explained.
Hon. Edward Baliddawa (Kigulu North), who is the brainchild behind the Busoga Tourism Initiative, revealed that a Chinese delegation visited the site with the view of funding the redevelopment but there was a dispute over ownership of part of the land. Baliddawa blamed the Town Clerk for failure to address the hitches adding that the officials are only interested in the gate collections, which they never declare.
The Deputy Town Clerk Jinja Municipal Council, Jofram Waidhuuba, pledged to write to the Government Valuer and have the land valued within seven days.

Residents of Butagaya sub-county in Jinja district have abandoned the body of their colleague in a house on suspicision of having died of the deadly maburg fever.

According to Moses Batwala a resident and former jinja district vice chairman, 60 year old Sylvester Ziraba a resident of Kamira village died on Sunday after several days of vomiting blood.

Batwala reveals that the deceased was also passing lood in his urine in addition to having red eyes and high body temperature.

He said Jinja hospital medical team was called but failed to show up  for tests on the deceased to give confirmation on whether or not this was a marburg case.

Ziraba died yesterday but by this afternoon, the body had not been taken to hospital for examination.

But when contacted on phone, the district health officer Dr Peter Dyogo ruled out the possibilities of the deceased having died of Maburg, calling for calm among the residents as they investigate the cause of the death.

A fresh outbreak of the deadly marburg fever was reported in the country early this month and has so far claimed 6 lives while over 100 suspected cases are still being mornitored by health officials in Kabaale where it was first reported and at Mulago hospital.
