Japan and Qatar have secured qualification to next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup after claiming quarter-final victories at the AFC U-19 Championship on Sunday.

In the day’s first quarter-final at Indonesia 2018, Qatar became the first Asian side to book their place at Poland 2019 after a thrilling 7-3 extra-time win over Thailand.

Qatar went into half-time with a two-goal lead after strikes from Hashim Ali and Nasser Al Yazidi. Thailand, however, hit back with three second-half goals, and just as it looked like they were about to secure qualification to their maiden U-20 World Cup, Qatar’s Ahmed Suhail grabbed an equaliser on 87 minutes to send the game to extra time at 3-3.

It was in extra time that Qatar found the net four more times, with Abdulrasheed Umaru bagging a brace, while Khaled Mansour and Youssef Ayman also got on the score sheet. The result ensured Qatar will make their fourth appearance at a U-20 World Cup next year.

Japan followed Qatar’s achievements by securing their tenth appearance at a U-20 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over hosts Indonesia in their quarter-final clash.

Playing in front of a passionate crowd of 60,000 at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, it was the Samurai Blue that claimed the edge five minutes before half-time through a sensational long-range strike from Shunki Higashi. Any hopes that Indonesia had of turning the match around ended on 70 minutes when Taisei Miyashiro doubled Japan’s advantage.

With all four AFC U-19 Championship semi-finalists qualifying for Poland 2019, two more nations from the AFC will book their passage to next year’s global finals. On Monday, Korea Republic take on Tajikistan in their quarter-final match-up, while Saudi Arabia meet Australia in the day’s other last-eight contest.

The 2019 U-20 World Cup will take place from 23 May to 15 June. Along with hosts Poland, Italy, Portugal, Ukraine, France and Norway will be the European representatives at the tournament, while OFC nations New Zealand and Tahiti previously booked their berths at next year’s competition.

The operation to rescue a group of boys and their football coach from a flooded cave in Thailand resumed today with more heavy rain forecast.

Most of the boys were successfully rescued from the cave on Sunday, more than two weeks after the group were trapped underground.

Authorities had been mulling ideas such as drilling holes into the mountain or waiting months until monsoon rains ended and they could walk out, with the rescue chief at one point dubbing the efforts to save them ‘Mission Impossible’.

There he goes: A helicopter believed to be carrying one of the rescued boys from the flooded cave lands in Chiang Rai followed by ambulances

Heavy rain which hit the area on Sunday night and storms forecast throughout the week for the northern Chiang Rai province could severely hamper the rescue mission, officials said.

Residents in Chiang Rai, the city closest to the caves, took to the streets to celebrate, with drivers honking car horns and pedestrians dancing outside the hospital where the Wild Boar FC players are now recovering.

The same divers who rescued four of the boys yesterday will carry out today’s bid to free more of the group.

Some two-and-a-half million people are still becoming infected with HIV every year, according to a new study published on Tuesday, even as drugs have slashed the death rate and virus-carriers live ever longer on anti-retroviral treatment.

Where as results from an early safety trial with a potential HIV vaccine show some promising results, this could that about a decade to be realized, according to the researchers.

This was among the key issues being discussed at the on-going International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa.

An 18-month trial with a candidate vaccine dubbed HVTN100 drew on 252 participants at six sites in South Africa, one of the countries hardest-hit by an epidemic that has claimed more than 30 million lives worldwide since the 1980s.

The participants fell within a low-risk category for contracting the sexually-transmitted virus, the researchers said.

The trial cleared a key hurdle in the long, three-phase process to test new drugs. In this early phase, the main point is to assess safety, not efficacy.

“We wanted to see if this vaccine candidate is safe in a South African population and if it is tolerable,” Kathy Mngadi, principal investigator at one of the research sites, explained to AFP.

The team also looked for antibodies signaling that the body’s immune system was responding to the vaccine.

The trial built on the foundations laid by a groundbreaking trial conducted in Thailand in 2009, which yielded the world’s first partially effective vaccine, dubbed RV144.

While hailed as a breakthrough, the effect of the Thai course decreased with time, dropping from 60 percent after one year to 31.2 percent after three-and-a-half years.

“RV144 set us on this journey of hope, but also showed us what we still need to learn and accomplish in this field,” said Fatima Laher, co-chair of the HVTN100 trial.

All the study criteria “were met unequivocally and, in many instances, the HVTN100 outcomes exceeded both our own criteria,” added trial protocol chair Linda-Gail Bekker.

The next phase of the trial, dubbed HVTN702, will kick off in November with the recruitment of 5,400 South African men and women aged between 18 to 25 at high risk of contracting HIV.

People are divided into risk categories through criteria that includes their sexual activity.

“We hope to have results in five years, and it is going to be a very exciting five years for all of us because it is the result of many, many years of hard work,” said Glenda Gray, HVTN Africa programme director.

A fully effective vaccine is still a long way off, she cautioned.

But recent studies have shown that even a partially effective blocker could have a huge impact if rolled out on a large scale.

While the quest for a cure continues, many view a vaccine as the best hope for stemming new infections.

Larry Corey, principal investigator for the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, a publicly-funded international project, said vaccines were barely mentioned the last time the conference was held in Durban some 16 years ago.

“It’s really gratifying now to see how far we’ve come scientifically,” he said.

Last year, billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates, who spends millions of dollars on AIDS drug development, said he hoped for an HIV vaccine within a decade, as a cure seems less likely.

Uganda’s outspoken and celebrated kick boxer Moses Golola lived up to trademark hype when he knocked out Thailand national, Wathaporn Kamunstorn in 50 seconds at the Kati Kati gardens in Kampala to win the World Kickboxing Federation (K1) middleweight title.

The kicking boxing fight had been highly anticipated and the turn up was good to cheer up Golola ‘of Uganda’  in action.

Golola did not disappoint when he hit Wathaporn with his left punch to knock the Thailand fighter out. Wathaporn did not put up a show we had hoped for only managing a straight kick before he was knocked out.

Golola lived up to the promise he had made to his fans of destroying Watharporn very fast  like what he had  done to Titus Tugume, whom he knocked out  in one minute.

Golola said he ‘wasn’t paid for overtime’.

Wathaporn was hit and he fell down unconscious on the canvas for about to 10 minutes before the first aid team came to his rescue.

He was later taken to Lisa Medical Hospital, Mengo, in an ambulance for examination.Golola who was jubilating about the win  saying,

I thank God for this victory,”He continued “Like David vs. Goliath, the person with the best weapon always wins. I did not go to Mabira for anything.”

The win took Golola’s record to 26 fights, 20wins (15knock outs) and 6 losses.

Some of the fans left Kati Kati in displeasure hoping Golola’s victory was match fixed.
