Roger Federer captured his fourth Miami Open title with an emphatic 6-1 6-4 win over defending champion John Isner.

The 37-year-old world number five broke in the opening game and took the first set in 24 minutes.

“What a week it’s been for me, I’m just so happy right now. It’s unbelievable. I played here in 1999 for the first time and here I am in 2019. It means a lot to me,” said the Swiss, who struck 17 winners overall, including six off his elegant backhand.

In his 50th Masters final, the Swiss fourth seed produced some typically sublime groundstrokes and wrapped up the match in an hour and three minutes.

It is his 28th Masters title and the 101st overall for a player who has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

Following his victory at the Dubai Championships, Federer becomes the first two-time champion on the ATP Tour this season, ending a streak of 19 different winners in 2019.

Isner came into the first meeting between the pair in Miami having not dropped a set throughout the tournament, winning nine of the 10 sets in the process by tie-break.

Federer had won four of their previous five matches on hard courts and asserted his dominance from the outset, losing only one point on serve in the opening set.

Seventh seed Isner had treatment on his left foot at 4-3 down in the second set but the match was soon brought to its conclusion as Federer improved his overall record against the angular, 6ft 10in (2.08m) American to six wins in eight matches.

Former world number one Andy Murray took another big step in his comeback from hip surgery by beating fellow Briton Kyle Edmund in the second round of the Washington Open.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray beat British number one Edmund 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 6-4. He will play Romania’s Marius Copil in the third round.

“It was much better, just in terms of the way I actually played the match,” said the Scot, 31.

“Regardless of the result, we wanted to at least be dictating more points, trying to use my forehand, be closer to the baseline.

“I think I did that, especially in some of the important moments in the third set. I was being more offensive.”

Edmund beat Murray at Eastbourne in June – in the third match of his return during the grass-court season – before the world number 832 pulled out of Wimbledon.

Edmund, 23, said: “I gave my best of what I had on the day, it just didn’t work out. It would have been nice to hold serve and maybe even control what I can and take [the third set] to a tie-break but it didn’t happen.”

Defending champion and world number three Alex Zverev beat Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri 6-2 6-1 and will play his brother Mischa in the third round.

After five years together on the ATP Tour, this will be their first meeting on court. “It’s going to be very interesting for me. It will be a special day,” said Alex Zverev. “Not many families can say they have two players playing at this level.”

Belgian third seed David Goffin survived a scare against France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert to win 6-2 1-6 7-6 (7-5) while Japan’s Kei Nishikori beat American qualifier Donald Young for the second year in a row, winning 6-3 6-4.

He will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the next round, while Goffin plays American Frances Tiafoe. Fifth seed Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the tournament with a hip injury, having retired during his Atlanta Open quarter-final last week.

Elsewhere, British number two Cameron Norrie is through to the quarter-finals of the Los Cabos Open in Mexico, following a 6-3 6-3 victory over Spanish eighth seed Feliciano Lopez. Norrie, 22, will play Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the last eight.

With the SW19 tournament fast approaching, Murray says he has returned to training and playing in the grass court season remains his aim.

Speaking in a video on the Guardian’s website, Murray said: ‘It’s been very slow, I’ve been out getting close to a year now which is a lot longer than I expected at the beginning.

‘I’m getting closer to playing again, I’ve started training a few days ago, hoping to make my comeback during the grass court season.’

Murray’s mother Judy talked up her son’s return in time for the grass court season recently and the double Wimbledon champion is down to play the Libema Open in Rosmalen, Holland next week.

‘He is very resilient, always working really hard,’ she told BBC Sport

‘He knows what he still wants to achieve in the game. He is getting closer to where he wants to be.’

Serena Williams may have styled herself as a superhero in her now famous catsuit, but it could not protect her from the advancing years and a shortage of matches coming into the French OpenHer 36-year-old body protested at the strain being placed upon it, and the result was a hugely deflating withdrawal from her breathlessly-awaited fourth-round match against Maria Sharapova.

Serena Williams has pulled out of her French Open showdown with Russian Maria Sharapova

Instead of walking out on to the Court Philippe Chatrier she was heading to a hospital for an MRI scan, which should go some way to determining how ready she will be to mount a serious campaign in four weeks’ time for an eighth Wimbledon title.  Her desperation to return to SW19 was clear as she announced that she was scratching. Losing to Sharapova would have been unthinkable, and she did not want to enter the arena handicapped for the task.

‘Unfortunately I have been having some issues with my pectoral (upper chest) muscle, and it has unfortunately been getting worse to the point where right now I can’t actually serve,’ she said. ‘It’s kind of hard to play when I can’t physically serve.’ The return of Williams after the birth of her daughter has been a great fillip for the game, so everyone will wish to see her at Wimbledon, and maybe a warm-up event beforehand.

Yet Kim Clijsters, who won three Grand Slam titles after giving birth at the age of 24, warned of the physical demands that the great American is facing. ‘Pregnancy and birth is very physically demanding and you deal with new injuries that you are not used to,’ she said in her role as analyst for Eurosport’s Roland Garros coverage. ‘In the first part of my career I’d have recurring injuries and then after I had Jada I had new injuries.

‘I started having some back issues that I hadn’t done previously, so you have to get used to it and the way your body reacts. I needed 9-10 months before I was ready. I think Serena can get close to winning another Grand Slam. It’s in these new situations that she’ll go home and learn a lot about how she is feeling.’

Sharapova has not beaten Williams since Wimbledon 2004 but progresses through in Paris

Williams was keen to dispel any idea that she was running scared from Monday’s grudge match. ‘It’s very difficult, because I love playing Maria,’ she said. ‘It’s a match I always get up for, her game matches so well against mine. I’m beyond disappointed.

‘I gave up so much, from time with my daughter to time with my family. I put everything on the court, all for this moment.’ She denied that playing three sets in the doubles on Sunday had been a mistake, saying that she needed to test the shoulder and how it was strapped. The early intention, at least, is to play the rest of the summer on grass and hard courts. ‘I’m coming up to surfaces that are my absolute favourite to play on and that I do best on,’ she said. ‘Hopefully I can continue to heal and be able to play those events.’

The suspicion has always been that this outing on to the clay was with a more medium-term goal in mind, that of clinching a 24th Grand Slam title in London, and her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, hinted strongly at that. He stated that she would get scanned ‘so she has the best chances to play Wimbledon and hopefully win it, because that is why she came back’.

The 36-year-old will have an MRI scan on Tuesday to see if she will be fit in time for Wimbledon

He also told America’s Tennis Channel he believes that having a family will help her cope with the disappointment: ‘If it had been one year and a half ago she would have been destroyed completely. She is not destroyed, she is sad but she is also happy because she feels she plays great tennis, she feels she is this close to being completely ready, so she is looking forward to what’s coming next already.’

Sharapova, now through to the quarter-finals at an event she has won twice, will face Garbine Muguruza next. Muguruza enjoyed almost as easy a progress when her opponent, Ukrainian outsider Lesia Tsurenko, retired after two games.

It turned out that the match of the day was provided by 5ft 7in Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, who came back to defeat 6ft 8in South African Kevin Anderson 1-6, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6, 6-2. In the quarter-finals he will meet Rafael Nadal, who notched his 37th consecutive set at Roland Garros in beating German Maximilian Marterer 6-3, 6-2, 7-6.

It is up to the returning Serena to fly the Williams flag after Venus became the first big name to fall at this year’s French Open.

The 37-year-old No 9 seed was knocked out 6-4, 7-5 by China’s Qiang Wang. The seven-time Grand Slam champion made 35 unforced errors, while world No 91 Wang produced a superb display of clean hitting.

Venus Williams became the first big name to fall at this year’s French Open

Despite looking like a natural on clay, Wang only really started playing on the surface in 2017.

‘I just started to play on clay last year,’ she said on court after the match. ‘My coach says it is good for my game.’

On this evidence he certainly has a point, as Wang scampered around the court, sliding beautifully like a born dirtballer to score her first victory against a top 10 player since she beat Caroline Wozniacki in Kuala Lumpur in 2013.

Williams was beaten 6-4, 7-5 by China’s Qiang Wang in the first round of the tournament

This was the second year in a row that these two have faced each other in the first round here. Williams won a tight contest 6-4, 7-6 last year, and Wang had clearly taken heart from that match. ‘Last year was very close and I knew I had nothing to lose,’ said the 26-year-old.

Williams was perhaps the player who best took advantage of her sister’s absence from the tour last year to have her first child. She reached two Grand Slam finals, the first in Australia where she lost to a pregnant Serena, and made the semi-finals of the US Open.

But Roland Garros has always been her least favourite hunting ground of the four Slams, and while Wang looked a natural on clay the vastly experienced Williams looked decidedly uncomfortable with her movement at times.

It is the 67th singles title of the 29-year-old’s career and his third in Hamburg, where he last won in 2008.Nadal’s win will see him rise one spot to No. 9 in the rankings.

“It was a great match, many great points, many breaks, we fought hard,” Nadal said. He continued; “I had many ups and downs.”

She will head to the US Open next month aiming to complete the first calendar year Grand Slam of her career.

Muguruza was playing in her first Grand Slam final and took a 4-2 lead, before giving the top seed  immense panic by fighting back from a set and 5-1 down with two breaks of serve.

“There was definitely pressure towards the end,” said Williams, who also completed the ‘Serena Slam’ in 2003.

“Garbine started playing really well and I just had to think to stay out there and work really hard.

“I am having so much fun out on the court. Everyday is a pleasure to be playing and winning Wimbledon.”

A victory in New York would see the world number one match Steffi Graf’s calendar Slam of 1988, and tie the German’s open era record of 22 major wins.

Britain’s Andy Murray beat Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-4 7-5 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes to  reached his sixth Wimbledon semi-final in seven years under the Centre Court roof.

The world’s third seed had a solid performance while eliminating Vasek Pospisil who is ranked number 56 in the world and will take on second seed Roger Federer in the last four on Friday.

Murray, 28, had to bear with two rain delays, the second of which saw the roof brought across in the second set.

“It was difficult, we were stopped a couple of times,” said Murray.

“I felt I played some good stuff. He served extremely well for periods. I tried to change my return position at the end of the second set to see the returns better.”

The Scot is set for a 24th meeting with Federer hoping to have a great match; he said “I know Roger very well, we walked to the practice courts together this morning.

“Friday is a different story and hopefully we can have a great match.”

In the other match Seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer cruised past France’s Gilles Simon winning  6-3 7-5 6-2 in one hour and 34 minutes.

Federer who last won the Wimbledon title in 2012 beating Murray in the final stressed how hard their tie will be, the Swiss said,

“We both like to look back on that summer of 2012,” He added, “If we knew beforehand that I would win Wimbledon and him the Olympics, I think we both would have taken it. It was a great summer for us.

“I am happy for him, he is doing so well after his back surgery. People forget how hard it is to get back from injury and get back into contention to win tournaments.

“Friday will be a tough one for me but I am obviously looking forward to it.”

Meanwhile defending champion Novak Djokovic will play Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the other Wimbledon semi-finals.

The world number one Djokovic had an easy ride against Croatia’s Marin Cilic winning 6-4 6-4 6-4.
