Pep Guardiola has come out with his say following Manchester City fans’ pressure on his team to win the Champions League.

The Blues boss feels that the supporters’ relative indifference to the elite European competition is holding City back in their quest to scale the summit in a competition he won twice with Barcelona.

Manchester City fans booing their team in their Champions League against Lyon

Guardiola said recently that he does not feel City have enough history to win the Champions League as yet. But he said that a desire to succeed in the Champions League has to fill the whole club and hinted that City fans hostility to Uefa is a flaw in that.

City’s supporters still booed the Uefa anthem and the home game against Lyon saw thousands of empty seats, with many supporters believing the Premier League is a bigger target.

“That’s not enough that the manager wants to win it,” said Guardiola. “It’s not just the players. You have to have the desire – the club, chairman, owner, the fans, everyone has to push to be closer, to achieve the next stages, and when it happens, everyone will feel it.”

“It’s one important thing to win this kind of title, you have to be pushed, not just by the manager, but by everyone surrounding Manchester City that we have to win it – and still we don’t have that feeling.” He said.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Alexis Sanchez is among the six Manchester United players ruled out of the Champions League clash with Juventus tonight.

Sanchez was not present in open training at United’s Carrington training complex on Monday morning after he entered late on in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Saturday.

The 29-year-old flew into London from Chile on Thursday and stayed in the capital where he gathered with teammates ahead of Saturday’s match at Stamford Bridge.

Sanchez will be joined on the sidelines on Tuesday night by Diogo Dalot, Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay and Phil Jones.

“The players you saw are the players that are available,” Mourinho said. “Nothing to hide and Alexis is out.”

Mourinho urged the United players to focus on their performance rather than the ‘awful’ result at Stamford Bridge, where a 96th-minute Ross Barkley equaliser denied them victory. The United manager admitted there were mixed feelings as the squad left Stamford Bridge.

“Against Chelsea, there were contradictions in our feelings because, by one side everybody was happy with the collective performance but not the result, so there were contradictory feelings.” He said.

Jardim’s dismissal news potentially opens the way for Thierry Henry to become the French club’s next boss after their former striker was linked to the vacancy. Former France and Arsenal star Henry 41, began his career at Monaco and helped them win Ligue 1 in 1997.

Portuguese boss Jardim was appointed in 2014 and led the club to the French title in 2017, their first since 2000.

The 44-year-old also guided Monaco to the Champions League semi-finals in 2016-17 and helped develop players such as forward Kylian Mbappe, now at Paris St-Germain, Thomas Lemar, Benjamin Mendy among others.

The Portugal boss believes his star man should have been crowned UEFA’s Player of the Year after losing out to the Croatian. Cristiano Ronaldo and not Luka Modric should have been crowned UEFA’s 2017-18 Player of the Year, according to Portugal head coach Fernando Santos.

According to Santos, Cristiano Ronaldo should have been crowned UEFA’s 2017-18 Player of the Year

Ronaldo scored 15 goals to lead Real Madrid to a third successive Champions League crown last season but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner lost out to former team-mate Modric.

Modric won the most votes from coaches and journalists as Ronaldo – who left Madrid for Italian champions Juventus in the off-season – opted to skip the Monaco ceremony last month.

Asked about the decision to overlook Portugal captain Ronaldo, Santos told reporters: “The vote for the best of FIFA is not mine. If it was mine, Ronaldo was the champion.

 Luka Modric

Modric won the most votes from coaches and journalists to take the award

“Ronaldo is the champion for me. And in second place, I’d put Modric. But the rest of votes come from the public, journalists, other coaches, there are many people, so the decision will be announced at the right date.

“There’s a previous list, as I’ve already said, Modric is a fantastic player, that’s why I’ve put him in second. But in this previous election, I think Cristiano should’ve been the winner for all he did at that period of time and specially at the Champions League.”

Santos will be without Ronaldo – who is yet to open his Juventus account – for Portugal’s Nations League match against Italy on September 10. It is Portugal’s first appearance since the World Cup, where the European champions suffered a last-16 exit to Uruguay in Sochi.

“Portugal is a national squad with Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s European champion, the best player in the world. So, Cristiano Ronaldo, such as Joao Moutinho and all the others, Andre Gomes etc, I won’t name them all, they are all very important in this team,” Santos added.

“They achieved an extraordinary triumph for Portugal, they made history. A group of players that have played here and only lost twice, so there’s no with or without Ronaldo. And Ronaldo will be in conditions to play with us for a long time.”

Juve have a perfect record after their first three games of the season, but Ronaldo is yet to score a goal for his new team and has attracted criticism for his failure to find the net thus far.

Gonzalo Higuain is the second highest earner

Despite his failure to score, it comes as no surprise that Ronaldo is top of the rankings when it comes to earnings, but the wage gap between the Juventus star and the rest of the league is quite astonishing.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport have revealed the wages of all Serie A players, with the 33-year-old taking home far more than any of his team-mates or rivals. Ronaldo is earning an incredible €31 million (£28m/$36m) per season in Turin and is on a four-year deal with the reigning Serie A champions.

Paulo Dybala

Not only is the five-time Ballon d’Or and Champions League winner by far the biggest earner in the league, but he earns more than three times as much as anyone else.

Gonzalo Higuain, who joined AC Milan from Juve after Ronaldo arrived in Turin, is the next best paid, raking in €9.5 million (£9m/$11m) per season.

In the kindest way possible, Cristiano Ronaldo is a freak of nature and his medical results at new club Juventus back up that statement.

It has emerged that the striker’s physical state has been compared to a 20 year old after results in his medical show that he has 7% body fat when the average for a professional footballer of his age is 10%, and 50% of his body is muscle mass, compared to 46% on average and an incredible 50% muscle mass, which is significantly better than his fellow professionals of that specific age group.

The muscle mass of Ronaldo’s body is 50 percent

Not only that but the 33-year-old ran 33.98km at the World Cup, which was faster than anyone at the tournament. He just continues to smash records, despite his age.

Before he joined the Turin side earlier this month, Real Madrid‘s coaching staff performed a series of tests on Cristiano Ronaldo‘s body and the results indicate that he had the physical condition of a 23-year old.

Although he isn’t as quick as he used to be, the five-time Balon d’Or winner still has pace to burn. According to Spanish newspaper AS back in 2017, the maximum speed that Cristiano recorded was of 33.25 km/hour.

If you compare that to Manchester City‘s Leroy Sane, the German winger became the Premier League‘s fastest when he was recorded running at 35.48 km/hour.

Ronaldo again proved his unbelievable physical presence during Real Madrid’s win against Juventus in the Champions League, jumping over 2.3m to score one of the greatest Champions League goals of all time.

He even practiced his overhead kick goal a day before during Real Madrid training, so it definitely wasn’t a fluke.

Luis Rubiales, the federation’s president, sacked Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup after the Basque had agreed to join Real Madrid and he appointed Fernando Hierro for the ill-fated campaign in Russia. Now, Rubiales has hired a permanent replacement and the former Barcelona coach is his choice.

Quique Sanchez Flores and Michel were also candidates to take the job, but Rubiales believed Luis Enrique – who played for La Roja on 62 occasions during his own career – would be the best choice and, as such, the Asturian becomes the 54th national team boss.

For Luis Enrique, this is his first position since he left Barcelona in the summer of 2017, after spending three years in the Camp Nou dugout, where he won three Copa del Reys, two LaLiga titles, one Champions League, one Supercopa de Espana, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World CupBefore Barcelona, he had coached Barcelona B, Celta Vigo and Roma.

The challenge for the new boss is to take Spain back to the top of the international game, as they have fallen in the group stages of the 2014 World Cup and at the last 16 stage at Euro 2016 and at this year’s tournament.

Liverpool‘s pre-season preparations have got off to the perfect start after Mohamed Salah signed a new long-term contract.

The Egypt international is currently on holiday after playing at the World Cup but he has ended any discussion about his future after Liverpool ripped up his old terms and rewarded him with a deal that reflects his standing as one of the top players in Europe.

Mohamed Salah has signed a new contract with Liverpool after a stunning season for the club

Mohamed Salah has signed a new contract with Liverpool after a stunning season for the club

Salah, who had initially signed a deal worth around £100,000-per-week when he moved to Anfield from Roma 12 months ago, will now be one of Liverpool’s highest earners and having scored 44 goals in all competitions can expect to have doubled that figure.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has already targeted an improvement on last season, when the club reached the Champions League final and finished in the top four.

It had long been a priority for Liverpool to reward Salah for his outstanding debut campaign. His tally of 32 goals in the Premier League broke a record for a 38-game campaign and he was instrumental in helping his side reach the Champions League final.

Real Madrid, who beat Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev, had been persistently linked with Salah for a long period but Liverpool have a strong relationship with Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas Issa and negotiations between him and sporting director Michael Edwards were smooth.

The new terms will keep Salah at Anfield until the summer of 2023 and, crucially, there is no release clause.

It is now Liverpool’s policy when brokering deals with their players that release clauses are not included — that was a reason Emre Can chose not to renew his terms.

Salah's new contract will come as a boost to the Anfield club ahead of the new campaign

Salah’s new contract will come as a boost to the Anfield club ahead of the new campaign

Klopp believes Salah’s new deal symbolises Liverpool’s bright future: ‘I think this news can be seen for what it is; rewarding a person who performed and contributed greatly for the team and the club last season.

‘It demonstrates two things very clearly also – his belief in Liverpool and our belief in him.

‘We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions – we are working hard together to achieve this.

‘When someone like Mo Salah commits and says this place is my home now, it speaks very loudly I think.

‘Equally, our commitment to him says we see his value and want him to grow even more and get even better within our environment.

‘The key thing to remember is the best thing about Mo is that he never sees himself as being more important than the team or anyone else within it. He recognises his team-mates and this club helped him achieve individual success last season. He sees the individual awards come because he is part of something bigger that is special.

‘Mo reflects where we are as a team, I think. Last season was special with many special moments – but we want more.

‘We want to be more successful and achieve more together – as the supporters sang so loudly, “we’re never gonna stop”. This has to be the attitude individually and collectively.’

Zlatan Ibrahimovic became the first player to represent seven different clubs in the Champions League when he came on as a 74th-minute substitute for Manchester United in their 1-0 defeat to Basel on Wednesday

He is also the first player to score for six different sides in the UEFA Champions League; Ibrahimović was level with fellow former Barcelona man Javier Saviola in having represented half a dozen teams. However, after his recovery from injury, the 36-year-old Swedish forward has been able to add a united game to his appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Barcelona, Interazionale Milano, Juventus and Ajax as he seeks his first UEFA Champions League title.

In the overall rankings, Ibrahimović stands joint eighth in terms of UEFA Champions League appearances on 120, alongside Roberto Carlos and ex-Barcelona colleague Lionel Messi, who also reached that mark today – though in his case all for a single club. Ibrahimović is also just two goals away from becomng only the seventh player to register 50 in the UEFA Champions League.
