The first lady of Uganda, also the Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni has officially congratulated the Uganda Cranes upon the recent back to back victories over Lesotho national football team in group L of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Emma Okwi

Emmanuel Okwi netted twice in the first leg of the game

Uganda Cranes overcame the Southern Africa country 3-0 and 2-0 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole and at Setsoto stadium in Maseru respectively to collect 10 points after 4 games in the campaign, leaving Uganda in need of just a point to qualify to the 2019 finals that will be held in Cameroon.

Emmanuel Okwi netted twice and Faruku Miya (penalty) were on target in the Namboole game as Miya carried the day with a brace in the return leg played on artificial surface in Maseru.

The Uganda Cranes contingent to Maseru traveled by a chartered flight offered by President Yoweri Kaguta Mueveni which helped a lot the national team to travel with ease within three days of the return leg after the Namboole success.

Here is the First Lady’s detailed message:

I must begin by thanking God for his goodness and for empowering our boys and leading them as we now see. Then, of course, I congratulate them for emerging victorious during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier return match against Lesotho 2-0 on Tuesday, 16th October 2018 in Lesotho, after the previous win of 3-0 at Mandela National Stadium on Saturday 13th October 2018. Our national team’s performance has been very impressive putting us on the verge of qualifying for the 2019 AFCON Championships due in Cameroon.

On behalf of Government, my Ministry and all the people of Uganda, I salute the Uganda Cranes, Coach Sebastien Desabre and his Technical Team, FUFA, National Council of Sports, and the fans for the observable progress we have registered in performance and development of Ugandan football, and indeed Ugandan sports in general.

As we celebrate our recent performance, I call upon the players, technical officials, fans and supporters to remain humble, focused to the very end. For I believe that this is merely the beginning, the best is yet to come.

In a very special way, I thank the President of Uganda, Cabinet in its entirety and Parliament for supporting sports in general, but the president especially for providing quick means of transport to Lesotho and some support for our pocket expenses to the team. We, at the Ministry, remain committed to provide all the prayer back up, logistical and financial support to Ugandan sports teams within available resources.

May I wish the Uganda Cranes team, continued blessings and a successful AFCON 2019 qualification campaign, therefore, as we look forward to an even brighter future for Ugandan sports.

God Bless us all!

Janet K. Museveni

Uganda Cranes have one point remaining to book a place in the 2019 African Cup of Nations finals after defeating Lesotho in Maseru on Tuesday.

Farouk Miya hited two first half goals to make it two wins from two games against the same country Lesotho, with the first win being 3-0 at Namboole last Saturday.

Miya kicked a strike in the 6th minute just outside the box to open the scoring, and then swept in the winner 10 minutes before half time from a free kick near the edge.

Lesotho 0-2 Uganda AFCON group qualifiers

Farouk Miya hited two first half goals to make it two wins from two games against the same country Lesotho, with the first win being 3-0 at Namboole last Saturday.

Allan Kateregga nearly broke the deadlock before Miya’s strikes when he whipped-in a cross but went wide.

Lesotho came close to scoring in the 17th minute but Matlama FC’s Mabuti Potloane effort went wide.Later, Left back Sello Bokang forced Onyango into a fine save after stretching to his right to deny the goal.

Miya was then booked for overreaction, just like Lesotho captain Mafa Moremoholo moments later for clipping Okwi right outside the box down the left flank.

Desabre brought in Egypt-based Isaac Muleme Kateregga in the 58th minute after the return.

Uganda tops the group L with 10 points with only two games remaining against Cape Verde and Tanzania.

Moses opondo who is keen to play his first game in Uganda cranes jersey

Uganda face Central African Republic on Wednesday 30th May 2018 night and Denmark-based winger Moses Opondo wants to make his debut.

The Cranes international player, a right winger who turns out for Danish Superliga club Vendsyssel FF, could win his maiden cap.

Opondo has already expressed the desire to grab the opportunity with open hands, as he attested to the FUFA media team.

“I am looking forward to my debut when I put on the Uganda colors. However I still need to prove my worth for this selection,” he said

Before joining the Uganda Cranes team in Niger, Opondo was part of the Vendsyssel FF team that won 3-1 away to Thisted FC at the Sparekassen Thy Arena, in a game where he was also cautioned in the ninth minute.

It is reported that Sebastien Desabre the head coach of the Uganda Cranes has a good platform to continue monitoring players he had not seen in action for the national team.

The players include midfielders Aucho Khalid and Faruku Miya, as well as Austrian-based striker Edrisa Lubega, as the trio missed the previous two build-ups in Kampala against Sao Tome and Principe as well as Malawi.

Meanwhile, the friendly matches in Niger will help Desabre to frame the team that will take part in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers come September 2018.

Ghana beat the Uganda Cranes 1-0 in their group D opening game of the African Cup of Nations in Gabon on 17th, January.

The Black stars scored through a penalty after Isaac Inside lost control of the ball and pulled Asmoah Gyan leaving the referee with no choice but to award Ghana the penalty.

Westham striker Andre “Dede” Ayew stepped up and converted to spot-kick in the 32nd minute   which eased Ghana to a narrow 1-0 win against the Cranes.

Ayew’s goal means he has now scored seven Nations Cup finals goal – one more than his father and legendary former Ghana captain, Abedi Pele scored. But he remains one African title behind his father, who lifted the trophy in 1982.

Ghana missed several chances through Gyan,Christian Atsu,Jordan Ayew were all guilty of failing to beat Uganda’s goalkeeper Dennis Onyango.

Ghana played generally a defensive game in the second half since they were defending their lead.

Uganda were left frustrated on their return to the Nations Cup after 39 years of absence when they failed to get anything from the game.

The Cranes created few goal scoring opportunities with the likes of Faruku Miya,Geofrey Massa,Muhammed Shaban and Geoffrey Sserunkuma failing to find the back of the net.

Meanwhile, the other group D match,Egypt played out a goalless draw against Mali giving hope to the Uganda Cranes of qualification.

Ghana will next take on Mali on 21st January while Uganda will face record seven-time champions Egypt on the same day.
