The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering has an enrollment of 1,700 students, which is one of the largest faculties of TU Delft. The faculty is one of the highest international ranking is unique in Europe. While the main focus of the faculty is in the development of aerospace systems, the implementation of these systems plays an equally important role. The research explores topics ranging from earth observation to wind power and other sustainable energy technologies. The work environment at the faculty is friendly, open minded and dedicated.

The Department of Remote Sensing is one of six departments in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. In the Department of Remote Sensing, research conducted in the areas of (i) Optical, Laser and Acoustic Remote Sensing (ii) Mathematical Geodesy and Positioning, and (iii) Physical and Space Geodesy.

Description

The candidate will work on an analysis of the design and implementation of future gravity satellite mission to control the mass transport in the Earth system.

The recent success of the GRACE gravity satellite mission has demonstrated the feasibility of direct measurement of the redistribution of mass in the Earth system from space. In particular, the redistribution of water can be seen, it is essential to monitor key indicators of climate and mass balance of ice-sheet, change ground water storage, increased sea level and circulation ocean. main objective of this project is to study some key elements and parameters of a future GRACE follow-on mission to be launched in 10-15 years. The accuracy of the new mission must be greater than that of grace by a factor of 10 to 100, enabling the observation of mass transport processes with unprecedented spatial resolution. The backbone of the proposed project is a systematic inventory and analysis of the constraints that have a role in the future gravity satellite missions. Possible ways to overcome these limitations may include (1) models use mass transit fund with greater precision and spatial-temporal resolution, and advanced data processing techniques, (2) the exploitation of advanced satellite sensors and observation systems, and (3) the optimal design of a satellite formation (or a set of training).

Requirements

Applicants must have a university degree (masters or doctorate), preferably in geodesy, aerospace, terrestrial physics or applied mathematics. Must have basic knowledge in at least three of the following disciplines: celestial mechanics, physical geodesy, satellite design, and programming in a high-level language (like FORTRAN 90/95). The experience with the simulation of satellite orbits and / or processing of satellite gravity data is beneficial. Applicants also must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Conditions of employment

The position offered is either for a temporary period of 4 years (1 year and an additional 3 years after a positive performance evaluation) for a PhD or for a temporary period of 3 years for a Post-doc. A contract as either PhD or Post-doc will depend on the candidate’s educational level (MSc or PhD), experience and background.

The maximum monthly salary for a PhD is € 2612 gross and for a Post-doc € 3755 gross, based on a full-time appointment.

TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the ‘IKA’).
