The Catholic Church in Uganda has suspended Fr Anthony Musaala, over a stinging letter he wrote recently accusing the church of being pretentious over sexual crimes allegedly committed by catholic priests.
A statement from the Catholic Church today said Fr. Musaala has been suspended for the “publication of his article in the public media which damages good morals of Catholic believers and further expresses a wrong teaching against the Catholic Church’s teaching and that this stirs up hatred and contempt against the Church, he incurs a Ferendae sententiae penalty as prescribed by Can.1314.
“This means that Father Anthony Musaala is suspended from celebrating sacraments and sacramentals, from the powers of governance in accordance to the law of the Church Can.1335 and 1336§1n.1, 2and3 as investigations are being carried on.” the statement adds.
Fr. Musaala known more for his music than for his priestly roles fell out with the church after he was alleged to be engaging in homosexuality.
In his letter last week, he asked the catholic church to allow its priests the freedom to marry because according to him many are engaging in sexual exploits that have left the church’s image tattered.
But while this was not the first such criticism of the church or call for optional celibacy, the hard letter was bound to throw the lonely priest in trouble, given his admission of not liking the way the church was treating them, and that he was already organising to find out and prosecute sexual crimes against catholic priests.
