An education Fund in honour of a former secretary general and chief judge in Kigezi sub region, Paul Ngorogoza has been set up to benefit at least eight girls in Kabale University every year.
Representing President Yoweri Museveni, Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda launched the Paul Ngorogoza Education Fund at Savanah Hotel in Kihihi, Kanungu district on Monday.
A brainchild of the International Community of the Banyakigezi (ICOB) Uganda Chapter led by Dr Peter Ngategyize, it targets two girl students from each of the four districts of Kanungu, Rukungiri, Kabale and Kisoro that form the sub region.
Dr Rugunda auctioned the late Ngorogoza’s portrait at Shs 30.5m, which included his contribution of Shs 5m in aid of the Fund. Organisers said it would fully support beneficiaries with tuition and other necessary requirements for three years at Kabale University.
Philanthropist James Musinguzi Garuga contributed Shs 100m as an endowment to the Fund, including sponsorship for two other children living outside the sub region but hailing from Kigezi every year. He also undertook to sponsor six other girls for three years at Kabale University.
Dr Rugunda delivered President Museveni’s message in which he appealed for intensified efforts to wealth creation at household level through treating agriculture as a business. He urged the people to take on profitable ventures in order to generate maximum income.
The Prime Minister also briefed them on the progress of tarmacking roads, government support to the tea industry, the proposed standard gauge railway connecting Muko iron ore mines to the rest of the world, and other projects among others, in the sub region.
“It is always important to be balanced and talk about the good things government has done rather than simply criticise it,” he noted. He called upon everyone to support government efforts aimed at ridding the country of bad practices such as corruption.
The State Minister for Economic Monitoring, Henry Banyenzaki disclosed that the government had set aside Shs 200b for procuring and distributing seeds and seedlings to farmers but was stuck with the money for lack of service providers.
“There is money on the Seeds and Seedlings Fund but neither seedlings nor suppliers are available,” he said. He blamed incapacity to use the facility on individual mindset, urging people to take advantage of government efforts to banish poverty.
Area Members of Parliament Amama Mbabazi (Kinkizi East), Chris Baryomunsi (Kinkizi West), Elizabeth Karungi (Kanungu Woman), David Bahati (Ndorwa West), Bank of Uganda Governor Tumusiime Mutebile, other business, academic and political leaders, among others, participated.
