Parliament has approved a recommendation by the parliamentary education committee to halt the salary increment of science teacher stating that its discriminatory against arts teachers.
The parliamentary committee on education and sports chaired by Connie Nakayenze Galiwanango recommended that the salary increment of the Science teachers in the financial year 2018/19 be put on halt.
MPs rejected the increment of science teachers after the minister of Public Service, Wilson Muruli Mukasa pleaded with to allow the pay and failed.
Muruli Mukasa had wanted MPs to consider increment of science teacher salary over arts teachers on basis that sciences are the foundation of any society that wants to develop.

The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga said that government should find a solution to teachers pay rise without discrimination.
The committee said that government should consider harmonization of both the Arts and Science teachers’ salaries be actualized through wide consultations with the concerned stakeholders before effecting the proposal.
The committee report said that government should reconsider the proposal since what it intends to do is unconstitutional and discriminatory.
The committee report recommended that the amount allocated towards enhancement of the science teachers’ salaries should be used to recruit the 2,000 science teachers so that the schools without any teachers in the science subjects can be supported.
The committee recommends that the Ministry of Education and Sports together with the Ministry of Finance harmonize the salary structure in all public universities and halt the acquisition of new universities until funds are got for full payment of the university staff salaries.
The committee also asked the Ministry of Finance to provide for the l05 billion shillings shortfall in the salaries of public universities to avert unrest at the universities.
The committee further recommended that all resources allocated to the higher education students financing including the 4,ooo government sponsorship at universities and the over 6,000 government sponsorship at tertiary institutions, State House scholarships and bilateral aid plus scholarships be sent to the Higher Education Students Financing Board for equal consideration of all Ugandan students.
