In this article we bring to you the reasons why the Government has renewed its efforts to throw out the Rector of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Dr Ahmed Ssengendo. The government accuses Prof. Ssengendo of running down the Islamic education institute inUganda.
The move to see the professor out is being headed by State Minister for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional cooperation, Asuman Kiyingi. We hear he is heading this move on behalf of president Museveni. Kiyingi says that the government (Museveni) accuses Prof. Ssengendo of employing his relatives and friends in key IUIU positions.
However sources in government told us that the government is fighting at all corners to have Ssengendo out of IUIU because detectives and some Muslims in Mufti Shaban Mubajje’s faction reported to president Museveni that the professor was recruiting JEEMA & ADF rebels into the university administration.
The Muslims in the breakaway faction-led by the Supreme Mufti Sheikh Zubair Kayongo have warned Asuman Kiyingi to go slow on Ssengendo since he (Kiyingi) has no immunity from the Muslim wrath. Ssengendo was appointed Rector of IUIU in 2004, replacing Dr Mahdi Adam.
