Caterpillars invade Uganda

Caterpillars in different types have invaded most rural areas of the Republic of Uganda. These worms indiscriminately eat all types of green leaves. The caterpillars have already destroyed several hectares of maize, banana, coffee, beans, sweetpotato, and cassava plantations.

The most affected areas are in Wakiso and Mukono district in central Uganda. The caterpillars have entered into peoples houses, scaring away area residents.

Some homesteads our reporters visited in Kayunga and Mukono had been deserted due to heavy presence of caterpillars. The ministry of Agriculture, districts entomologists and the district Production Officers have so far failed to control the spread of these caterpillars.
