Makerere University L.C5 councillor at Kampala city council Bernard Luyiga has kicked off a hunger strike to protest the police brutality and mishandling of the opposition in the walk to work protests.

This followed a police officer in civilian clothes one Gilbert Arinaitwe mishandled the FDC leader Kiiza Besigye and other opposition members recently.

Luyiga has camped at the main gate with a pillow, mat and stool, threatening not to eat food in the protest of the way police is handling the people protesting the rising food and fuel prices through walk to work.

Luyiga said that he will not drop the hunger strike until the Inspector General of police Kale Kayihura restrains police from using excessive force while arresting the people in the walk to work demonstration.

He said that police should arrest the people demonstrating in a manner following the laws of the country.

He warned the students at the university not to join him in this strike and them to concentrate on their studies as he protests police brutality.

This is the second time luyiga is going on Hunger strike, after he went on hunger strike in 2007 while protesting the closure of Makerere University by government when the lecturers went on strike over low pay.
