ELCA Global Mission is in companionship with many Lutheran churches (“companion churches”) around the world.
The goal of ELCA Global Mission is to enable their church leaders to obtain advanced training in areas of work in which the church is engaged (theology, health care, development, etc.) not available in their home countries.
After their studies are complete and degrees are earned, the scholarship recipient returns home to work in a position designated by the companion church.
This process cannot be done without much sacrifice on the part of the student, the student’s family, and the home church.
The companion church determines its needs and then, in turn, who receives an application.
After endorsing their candidate, the application is forwarded to the ELCA Global Mission International Scholarship Office for further processing.
Specific scholarship requirements are:
- Applicants must be active members of a church or institution that is in companion relationship with the ELCA.
- Scholarships are normally not given to undergraduate or first level graduate degrees. ELCA Global Mission International Scholarships are normally for advanced graduate level programs in the area of theology or other church-related fields not available in the applicant’s home country.
- Scholarships are not given to citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.
- Scholarship recipients are required to return to their home country after their studies to work in a position designated by the companion church.
For further information or questions regarding scholarship assistance, please contact the Lutheran church in your home country.
All applications must come through one’s home church and cannot be made directly to the ELCA Global Mission.
