Smuggling a continuing concern of Uganda Revenue Authority

The Uganda Revenue Authority has released the annual report indicating the seizure of 4928 smuggled goods which enabled the Authority to recover 11.1 billion shillings in the financial year 2010/11.

The Assistant commissioner in charge of enforcement with URA James Kisaale said that Hides and skin tops the list of the goods smuggled for export without paying revenue. Others mostly smuggled include cigarettes, polythen bags, motor cycles, motor vehicles and counterfeit products among others.

He revealed that 46 containers of hides and skins were impounded   and 1.6 billion shillings recovered   and , 29million  sticks of cigarettes impounded and  1.4 billion shillings recovered , 45 motor vehicle   impounded and recovered 550 million shillings, 1,258 motor cycles impounded and  723 million shillings recovered22.8 tones of polythen bags impounded and 500 million shillings recovered.

He revealed that the Authority discovered 194 companies which were not declaring their Taxes and in this effort 963.4 million shillings was recovered.

He said that the URA will continue prosecuting the people who are engaging in smuggling goods into the country without paying taxes and auction all the goods impounded.
