War crimes trial against former LRA commander commences in Uganda

Trial of war crimes against the former Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) Former commander kicks off on Monday 11th July in Gulu.

The trial will be conducted by five judges on the International crimes Division of the High Court of Uganda headed by Justice Akiiki Kiiza. Others on the panel include Owiny Dolo and Justice Elizabeth Nahamya.

The first war crimes trials will be against the former LRA commander Thomas Kwoyelo who is accused of committing crimes against the people of Northern Uganda.

The project coordinator of the Uganda coalition on the International criminal court Joyce Apio applauded the judiciary and other stake holders for efforts in ensuring justice for all by commencing the war crimes trials and she added this move will fight impunity.

On 13 October 2005, the international criminal court issued  the warrants of arrest for five senior leaders of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) for Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes committed in Uganda since July 2002.

The ICC concluded that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Joseph Kony, Vincent Otti, Okot Odhiambo, Dominic Ongwen and Raska Lukwiya ordered the commission of crimes within the jurisdiction of the Court.
