The Electoral Commission (EC) has been bared from paying allowances to polling agents during the 2011 general elections.

This is contained in an amendment to the Presidential Elections Act which the Parliament considered on Tuesday this week.

The Presidential Elections Act as amended on April 27th 2010 bans the Electoral Commission from paying allowances to representatives of candidates taking part in an election.

The new law allows candidates participating in an election to appoint at least two representatives at each polling station to safeguard the interests of the candidate.
Presidential Elections Act also allows voters without voter’s cards to vote if their names and photographs appear on the voters’ register.
