Drug authority seizes illegal drugs in Kampala

A team of drug experts from the National Drug Authority (NDA) have this morning raided clinics in Kampala suburbs and seized drugs that was sold illegally.

The owners of the effected clinics have been arrested and others have gone into hiding. The NDA officials are executing their duties in Namasuba, Kabowa, Najjanankumbi and Ndeeba-all Kampala suburbs.

The officials have discovered that some clinics, Pharmacies and drug shops sell classified drugs without licences from NDA. The NDA’s Law Enforcement Officer, Wycliffe Arinaitwe says clinics are allowed to sell classified drugs only if they are licenced by NDA to operate pharmacies.

According to laws governing drugs in Uganda, clinics are supposed to sell simple first aid drugs. Uganda grades drugs into three categories- Class A for narcotics, Class B for restricted drugs and Class C for over-the counter drugs.

Class A and B are classified drugs and must be given out to people after prescription by a professional and registered medical officer.

Arinaitwe says it is illegal to operate a drug shop, clinics and Pharmacies without licences and trained medical staff.
