Uganda National Roads Authority warns trailer drivers over weighting scales

Trailers required not to overlaod

The Uganda national Roads Authority has refused to give in to demands by drivers of trailers and other long vehicles who are protesting the roadway weighing bridges that have been put on different roads to ensure the trailer don’t surpass the load limit required of vehicles to avoid spoiling roads.

This follows protests on Wednesday by drivers in Mubende on Kampala Fort Portal road, and in Lukaya on Kampala Masaka roads. The drivers who have blocked the roads say the weighing scales for UNRA are faulty and are resulting in a much higher load than they have actually loaded.

But Dan Alinange, the Spokesperson of the Uganda National Roads Authority says they the weighing scales are genuine and working well. He says if the trailer drivers are dissatisfied, they should go to court instead of blocking roads and creating public disorder.

Alinange says the drivers complaining have loaded more than 100 axles which are not allowed according to guidelines aimed at protecting roads from overloaded vehicles.

Since the government roads agency started weighing heavy trucks for the 100 axle wheel limit, many vehicles have been fined but the drivers keep complaining the weighing machines overstate their load.
